A four-year competitor on the equestrian team, Katie earned several regional and national awards for her skills. As a freshman, Follis competed as an open rider and finished third in open fences and open flats at Zone Championships. As a sophomore, Follis won her first National Championship in the open flat and finished third in the open fences, helping the team to Reserve National Champion in 1998. Her junior year, in addition to being the team's most valuable rider, Follis was also the Cacchione Cup rider, finishing the season as the top rider in the region.
