Judith Butler Shea, a 1960 graduate was a member of the alpine skiing team at Colby Junior College. She was the #1 skier on the team and competed in the Slalom/Downhill events. In her time on the slopes in New London, she won or finished near the top in all of her meets. She was also honored by Sports Illustrated by being put in the magazine as one of their 'Faces in the Crowd' which highlights high school and college students making an impact at their institution.
Butler Shea continued her alpine career after her time at Colby Junior College. She earned a second-place finish in the women's combined event at the 1963 North American Alpine Championship. She also competed in the 2000 Senior Alpine Games. She placed first in the Slalom and second in the Giant Slalom event for her age group. Butler Shea also attended the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Trials.
When she wasn't on the ski slopes, Butler Shea had a passion for being a referee. She was a rated official in six sports. Primary she officiated field hockey and lacrosse, but also was an official for volleyball soccer, and ice hockey.
