Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 29, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team defeated Daniel Webster, 9-4 in the season finale for each team on Tuesday afternoon at Kelsey Field.
BOX SCOREThe Chargers end the year at 9-25, while the Eagles finish at 12-20.
The Colby-Sawyer offense was led by freshman
Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior
Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.). Frongillo went 3-for-5 with a game best four RBI, while Greenwood went 3-for-4 and scored a game-high three runs. Seniors
Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.),
Vinny Monahan (Foxboro, Mass.) and
Chris LeBlanc (Swanton, Vt.) added two hits apiece.
Daniel Webster's offense was supplied from sophomore Devin DeCarteret (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Dan Quinn (Auburn, N.H.). The each had three hits on the afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer scored twice in its first at-bat on a RBI knock from Frongillo and a sacrifice fly from Lapple.
Frongillo and Lapple were at it again in the bottom of the second giving the Chargers a 5-0 lead. Frongillo had a two-run single to left and was followed by a RBI single to left from Lapple.
The Eagles got on the board in the fourth when Manny Cabral (Tewksbury, Mass.) came around on a Colby-Sawyer miscue.
Colby-Sawyer added four more runs in the bottom half of the fourth to go in front 9-1. Frongillo and senior
Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) had RBI singles in the frame, while LeBlanc hit a two-run single to left.
Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.) knocked in a run on a groundout to second in the top of the fifth to give Daniel Webster its second run of the game. The Eagles would score once more in the inning on a Charger error.
The visitors made the game 9-4 in the sixth with a RBI single from Dan Ierardi (Dunstable, Mass.) and that's where the score would remain for the final three innings.
Sophomore hurler
Mike Bowse (Merrimack, N.H.) threw the first four innings of the game for Colby-Sawyer and gave up one unearned run on six hits. Bowse combined with senior first baseman
Jake Szulak (Middleboro, Mass.) to record his team best seventh pickoff of the season. Seniors
PJ Singster (Sandown, N.H.),
Dave Maestri (Lexington, Mass.),
Alex Drost (Brownsville, Vt.) and
Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) all made relief appearances in their final game.
The Eagles received strong relief work from Brandon Stevens (Manchester, N.H.) who tossed two scoreless innings of two-hit ball. John Hickson (Springfield, Mass.) and Mike Patane (Salem, N.H.) each threw a perfect inning of relief.
