Baseball Drops Twin Bill to Pilgrims

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HENNIKER, N.H. – April 28, 2014 - New England College baseball swept the visiting Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Monday afternoon. The Pilgrims took game one by a score of 5-4 in eight innings and game two 7-2.

With the wins the Pilgrims improve to 10-22 overall and 7-15 in NAC play.  The two losses drop the Chargers to 8-25 overall and 5-16 in the NAC.
 
Colby-Sawyer would open game one scoring in the fourth inning as Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) and Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) led off the inning with back-to-back infield singles. Frongillo came around to score on a ground ball to shortstop by TJ O'Connor (Bethel, Maine).
 
NEC would get the run back in the home half of the fourth as Brandon Adorno (Ft. Myers, Fla.) hit a two-out single to right field followed by an RBI double in the right center field gap by Vincent Backert (Shelton, Conn.).
 
The Chargers would go up 2-1 in the fifth as Vinny Monahan (Foxboro, Mass.) hit a one-out single up the middle, stole second and scored on a shallow looping single off the bat of Nathan Frongillo. Colby-Sawyer would tack on an additional run as TJ O'Connor led off the sixth inning with a walk, move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.), advance to third on a single by Chris LeBlanc (Swanton, Vt.) and steal home on an attempted pick off.
 
Colby-Sawyer gained an additional insurance run as Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.) led off the seventh with a triple down the right field line and score on a wild pitch. 
 
NEC would storm back in the seventh inning as Steve DeLuca (Coxsackie, N.Y.) walked, which was followed by a Scott Fortune (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) single. Pinch runner Greg Appleman (Avon By the Sea, N.J.) and Fortune would then make it a 4-3 game scoring on a Kevin Caputo (Taunton, Mass.) triple to left center field.  Caputo then scored on a Francesco DiRe (Barrington, R.I.) single over the shortstop's head knotting the game at 4-4 and forcing extra innings.
 
NEC pitcher Eric Johnson (Whitman, Mass.) would strike out the side in the top of the eighth and the Pilgrims would come through with the game winning run in the bottom half of the inning as Scott Fortune would hit a two-out single scoring Brandon Adorono en route to the 5-4 victory.
 
Johnson picked up the win on the mound allowing four earned runs on seven hits and striking out 13.  At the plate the Pilgrims were led by Kevin Caputo who was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in and a run scored.
 
Colby-Sawyer was led by Nathan Frongillo who was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a run batted in. 
 
The Chargers would strike early in game two as they plated two unearned runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Justin Devoid. The Pilgrims would get a run back in the second inning as Vincent Backert doubled to center field and then score on a Kevin Caputo lined double to left center.
 
NEC would take the 3-2 lead in the third inning as Stanley Petteway (Waterbury, Conn.) singled and scored on a double to left center field by leadoff hitter Jordan Hubbard (Mount Vernon, N.Y.).  Hubbard would then advance to third on a balk and score on an Eric Johnson double over the head of the center fielder.
 
The Pilgrims would extend their lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Jordan Hubbard. NEC would make it 7-2 plating an unearned run in the fifth. 
 
NEC pitcher Christopher Smith (Raynham, Mass) would hold the Chargers to just three hits and no earned runs as the Pilgrims would close out game two with a 7-2 victory.
 
NEC's Kevin Caputo was 2-for-3 at the plate in game two, while Jordan Hubbard finished with two hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored for the Pilgrims.
 
Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer in game two was Justin Devoid who drove in both Charger runs in the first inning.
 
Colby-Sawyer will close out their season on Tuesday, April 29 when they host in-state non-conference opponent Daniel Webster College.
