Thomas Takes Two of Three Over Colby-Sawyer Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 27, 2014 – The Thomas College baseball team won two of three games in Sunday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) triple-header at Kelsey Field. Thomas won game one 2-0 and game three 3-2, while Colby-Sawyer took the middle game 6-0.  

Thomas improves to 9-27 overall and slides into the fourth slot in the NAC standings with an 8-13 mark. Colby-Sawyer falls to 8-23 overall and 5-14 in the NAC. The Chargers will play at New England College on Monday for a twin bill that begins at 2:00 p.m.

GAME ONE – Thomas 2, Colby-Sawyer 0 - BOX SCORE

Thomas put across both of its runs in the top of the third on a pair of RBI singles. Anree Benitez knocked in Joe Quinlin who reached on a walk for the game's first run. Jake Stilphen then knocked in Derek Kane who also had a single in the inning.

James McLamb earned the complete game shutout. He allowed four hits, struck out four and worked around five walks.

Alex Drost took the loss, throwing a complete game. He gave up six hits and struck out four.

Anree Benitez and Derek Kane each had a pair of hits from the top of the lineup.  

The Chargers recorded four hits from four different players.

GAME TWO –Colby-Sawyer 6, Thomas 0 - BOX SCORE

Colby-Sawyer pitcher Kevin Keith led the team to the game two victory with a complete game shutout. He struck out four and scattered eight hits.

The Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth on a RBI double from Andy Lapple and a sacrifice fly to center from Jon Wylie.

Colby-Sawyer then benefited from a pair of Thomas miscues in the fifth inning to score four times. Vinny Monahan, Nathan Frongillo and Andy Lapple had consecutive RBI singles to knock in the runners that reached. Wylie followed with his second sacrifice fly in as many at-bats to put the Chargers on top 6-0.

Frongillo went 3-for-3 from the plate to lead all players, while Monahan and Lapple added two hits apiece.

Taylor Bacon took the loss surrendering six runs (two earned) on nine hits.

Jake Stilphen had a team best two hits for the Terriers.

GAME THREE – Thomas 3, Colby-Sawyer 2 - BOX SCORE

Thomas scored all three of its runs in the second inning. Pitcher Derek Kane helped himself with a RBI single through the right side. The next batter, Nik Beeson, connected for a two-run single up the middle.

Colby-Sawyer pulled within one in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Jon Wylie knocked in Nathan Frongillo with a double to right. Wylie then came around to score on a wild pitch.

That would be as close as the Chargers would get, as they were retired in order in the final three innings.

Derek Kane was credited with the win after five strong innings of work. He struck out six and surrendered two runs on five hits. He also had a pair of hits.

Michael Fazio went the distance for the Chargers and gave up three runs on five hits, while striking out three.
