Baseball Splits with Fitchburg State to Open 2014 Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – March 8, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a twin bill with Fitchburg State at the Chain of Lakes baseball complex on Saturday to open the 2014 season. Fitchburg took game one 4-3, while Colby-Sawyer won the second game 5-1. The Chargers are 1-1 and the Falcons are now 2-2.  

GAME ONE – Fitchburg St. 4, Colby-Sawyer 3 - BOX SCORE

Fitchburg's Clayton Beaulieu drove in the game's first run in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to center field. 

Colby-Sawyer took the lead in the bottom half of the second with a pair of runs. Jon Wylie began the frame with a triple and was knocked in by freshman Nathan Frongillo who followed with a double. Frongillo later came around on a fielder's choice.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Falcons struck for three runs in the fifth on five hits. Steve Drury had an RBI single then came around to score with David Mason on a two-run double from Pierce Hans.

Colby-Sawyer got one run back in its last at-bat, but left the potential tying and winning runs on base to end the game.

Joe St. Hilaire earned his second win of the season with eight strikeouts in six strong innings. Ryan Magni got the save.

Alex Drost suffered the loss. He went 5.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs.

GAME TWO – Colby-Sawyer 5, Fitchburg St. 1 - BOX SCORE

Colby-Sawyer received a complete game shutout from Mike Bowse in the day's second game. He gave up one run on four hits.

Bowse allowed a walk and a single in the second inning, but cleared the bases with a pair of pickoffs.

Colby-Sawyer took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a towering homerun to left field by Nathan Frongillo. Alex Fredette scored on the play after reaching on a single earlier in the inning.

Fitchburg cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when Steve Drury scored on a dropped fly ball hit by David Mason. Drury led off the inning with a triple.

The Chargers created a comfortable gap in the top of the fifth inning with three runs. Rob Wallace had the big two-run single to center field. Jon Wylie scored the inning's third run when he and Wallace attempted a double steal. Wylie crossed the plate before Wallace was tagged out in a rundown.

Bowse got into a little trouble in the bottom of the seventh with a hit batsman and a single, but was able to induce a nubber to first-baseman Justin Devoid who gathered the ball and stepped on the bag to end the game.

Kyle Cutler suffered his second loss of the season. He gave up five runs and struck out seven.

Colby-Sawyer plays a doubleheader against SUNYIT at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla. First pitch is at 4:00 p.m. The Falcons will play SUNYIT on Monday.
