Colby-Sawyer Drops Twin Bill to Husson

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 7, 2012 – The Husson University baseball team won both games of Saturday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East doubleheader at Colby-Sawyer. The Eagles won the first game 2-0 and followed with a 7-4 win in the second.

Husson improves to 11-12 overall and 8-4 in the NEAC, while Colby-Sawyer dips to 11-15 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

Colby-Sawyer steps out of NEAC play on Monday to host Eastern Nazarene for one nine inning game at 3:30 pm. Husson travels to Maine-Farmington on Tuesday for a NEAC twin bill.

GAME ONE BOX SCORE – Husson 2, Colby-Sawyer 0

The only two runs of the game came in Husson's half of the second inning. Junior Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to third on a pair of pass balls. After a walk to freshman Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, Maine) put runners on the corners, Colby-Sawyer's pitcher Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) was called for a balk, awarding Smith home plate.

Gendreau was standing on second when he was knocked in on a single from junior Josh Tardiff (Plainfield, Conn.).
Two runs were enough for Husson senior hurler Nate Adams (Frankfort, Maine). He tossed a complete game shutout to earn his third win of the season. He allowed six hits and struck out six.

Keith, who is 3-3, went the distance for the Chargers and allowed one earned run and struck out four.

Sophomore Benjamin McLain (Pemaquid, Maine) and junior Jake Arthers (Belfast, Maine) each had a pair of hits for the Eagles.

Senior Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) led Colby-Sawyer with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

GAME TWO BOX SCORE – Husson 7, Colby-Sawyer 4

The home teamed opened the scoring in the first with a pair of runs on three hits and a walk. Senior Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) knocked in senior teammate Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) on a single to right. Sophomore Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) scored the second run when he stole home on a double steal.

Husson took a lead in the third, scoring six unearned runs on a pair of Colby-Sawyer miscues. Freshman Casey Estes (Old Town, Maine) had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single up the middle. Sophomore Nick Lancisi (Dover, Maine), sophomore Niko Ververis (Plainfield, Conn.), senior Kevin Rennick (Lincoln, R.I.), and sophomore Dylan Foster (Oakland, Maine) also had RBI's in the inning.

The Eagles added a seventh run in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun by sophomore Benjamin McLain (Pemaquid, Maine).

Colby-Sawyer scored two runs in their final at-bat on an RBI double from junior Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.) and a sac fly from junior Sean Gavin (Keene, N.H.).

Sophomore Pat McEwen (Brewer, Maine) earned the win for Husson. He tossed a complete game and allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Senior Ryan Gillan (Alton, N.H.) took the loss, but gave up just one earned run in five innings. Senior Brendan Harding (Medford, Mass.) worked two hitless innings in relief.

Sophomore Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) led Colby-Sawyer with two hits.
