Baseball Earns Two Important Wins at New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. - April 18, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team won both ends of an important doubleheader at New England College today. The Chargers won the first game 4-3 and followed with a 5-2 victory in the second.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 17-18 overall and 10-12 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East action. New England College is 16-16 overall and has been elminated from post season contention with a 5-15 mark in the NEAC.

The Chargers wrap up the conference regular season on Thursday with a twin bill against Castleton at Kelsey Field beginning at 2:00 pm.

In game one, the Pilgrims would get on the board first as Juan Berrios (Ft. Myers, Fla.) doubled and was later brought in thanks to a double from Brandon Adorno (Ft. Myers, Fla.). Adorno eventually came around to score on a Francesco DiRe (Barrington, R.I.) single.

The Chargers battled back tying the game in the top of the fifth as Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.), pinch running for Jake Szulak (Middleboro, Mass.), would steal second, advance to third on a Rob Wallace (Tewksbury, Mass.) single, and score when Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) hit into a fielder's choice. Mehuron would get caught in a run down between second and first, which would score Matt Emond (Hooksett, N.H.) who was pinch running for Wallace.

The Chargers would add two more runs in the top of the sixth when Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.) hit a two-run home run with two outs in the inning.

Leading the way for the Pilgrims was Brandon Adorno who had two hits and two runs batted in, while Chris Biskup (South Portland, Maine) finished with had two hits in the game.

Grabbing the win on the mound for the Chargers was Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) who improved to 5-3 on the season.

In game two, the Pilgrims would get on the board first in the home half of the second inning as Brandon Adorno and Christopher Smith (Raynham, Mass.) singled and scored on a Pierce Byrd (Ft. Myers, Fla.) double.

The Chargers would get one back in the next inning as Sean Gavin (Keene, N.H.) doubled and advanced to third by a Greg Mehuron ( Waitsfield, Vt.) single. Gavin would later score on a balk putting the Chargers on the board.

The Chargers would strike again in the sixth inning as Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) would lead off with a single and come around to score on a single by a Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.). Martin would eventually score on an error by NEC's second basemen. Rob Wallace (Tewksbury, Mass.) would then follow with a single and come around on a Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.) double.

Leading the way for the Chargers was Rob Wallace who had two hits in game.  Playing well for the Pilgrims was Pierce Byrd who had a hit and two runs batted in.

Senior Greg Doucette got the win after tossing 2 2/3 innings of three hit ball.
