MEDFORD, Mass. - November 22, 2011 - The Jumbos of Tufts University outscored Colby-Sawyer by 13 in the second half en route to a 73-57 win in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
Tufts wins its first game and goes to 1-2, while Colby-Sawyer suffers its first loss of the season and drops to 3-1.
The first half of action was close as there were eight ties and five lead changes. The Chargers did build an early five-point advantage at 11-6. Tufts would come back to take a 17-15 lead though at the 11:15 mark on a three-pointer by sophomore Caitlin McClure (Arlington, VA).
The Jumbos' lead would get to four at 23-19, but again the momentum shifted and Colby-Sawyer regained a two-point lead after a pair of free throws from first-year
Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, RI). Tufts would tally seven of the final nine points of the half to go up 32-29 at the break.
Tufts only shot 34-percent in the first 20 minutes, but the team grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and forced 10 Charger turnovers. First-year Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) was 4 for 6 from the field for eight points while Colby-Sawyer junior
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, MA) led all scorers with 10 first-half points.
The Jumbos were hot in the second half, stretching the halftime lead to 15 in less than eight minutes. The run had four shots from beyond the arc, including a pair from senior Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) and one each from juniors Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL) and Bre Dufault (Hampden, MA).
Twenty-three would be the largest advantage of the game for the Jumbos, coming at the 5:54 mark after five straight points from Barnosky. Colby-Sawyer would make a late push getting back to within 12 with 1:53 left to play. The Chargers connected on a trio of three-pointers while junior
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, MA) led the charge with five points.
Tufts finished the game shooting 37.2 percent (29/78). The team's 22 assists were spread out among six players. First-year Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) finished one assist shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine assists, also collecting four steals. Barnosky led the Jumbos with 16 points and eight boards and Kanner completed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The other Tufts scorer in double digits was Dufault with 12 on 5 for 8 shooting, including 2 for 3 from long range. Senior Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) only tallied two points, but she dished out seven assists and grabbed seven caroms.
Colby-Sawyer shot 40 percent (22/55), but 18 turnovers and 20 Jumbo offensive rebounds were too much to overcome. Bullett led all scorers with 19 points on 8 for 13 shooting. She also added five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, MA) and DeSanty finished in double figures with 10 and 12 points, respectively.
Tufts will be on the road at Brandeis on Sunday at 1 pm. Colby-Sawyer host Plymouths State next Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
