Chargers Fall on Senior Day to Blue Jays

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular-season finale on Saturday to the University of Saint Joseph's (Conn.), 97-61. The Chargers honored their seniors Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) and Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.), prior to the start of the game. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The visiting Blue Jays would jump out to a 12-0 lead in the opening quarter, but first-year Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, N.H.) would knock down back-to-back layups to get the home team on the board. The Blue Jays continued to hit shots to extend their lead to double digits, but sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.) would knock down back-to-back three-pointers to trim the lead with 3:30 remaining. The Blue Jays continued to extend their lead to twenty points, but Holt would nail a three-pointer in the final seconds to trim the lead as the Blue Jays would lead 37-20 at the end of the first quarter. 
  • MacDonald would open the scoring in the second quarter by nailing a three-pointer, but the Blue Jays quickly responded with a jumper to extend their lead to 39-23 with 9:42 remaining. The Blue Jays would outscore the Chargers 23-9 late in the quarter to take a 62-32 lead at halftime.
  • The Blue Jays would score first to open the third quarter, but junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) responded with a three-pointer to trim the lead. The Blue Jays would continue to knock down shots late in the quarter, but sophomore Catherine Chick (Glen, N.H.) would chip in a free throw and jumper to continue to chip away at the Blue Jays lead. The teams continued to trade shots back and forth late in the quarter, but the Blue Jays would take an 83-50 lead at the end of the third quarter. 
  • The Blue Jays would jump out to a 9-1 run in the final quarter, but the Chargers responded with a layup from first-year Tanner Drury (Bethel, Vt.) and back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Delaney Raymond (Lyndon, Vt.) to trim the lead with 5:12 remaining. The Blue Jays would make a jumper late in the quarter to pull out the 97-61 win over the Chargers. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Chick paced the Chargers with 12 points (5-10 FG, 2-6 FT), 11 rebounds, and three assists, while MacDonald tallied 11 points (4-9 FG, 1-2 3PT, 2-4 FT), five rebounds, and two assists. Raymond recorded 10 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3PT) and one steal for the Chargers. 
  • Jordan Ouellette led the way for the Blue Jays with 31 points (14-19 FG, 3-4 FT), two rebounds, and two assists while Taylor Verboven added 22 points (10-14 FG, 2-4 FT), eight rebounds, and two steals.
