Henniker, N.H. – April 22, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team earned two victories in a sweep over New England College, winning game one 8-0 and game two 15-5. With the sweep the Chargers improve to 13-21 overall and 7-13 in conference play. The losses drop the Pilgrims to 8-20 overall and 3-17 in the conference.
In game one the two teams would battle scoreless throughout the opening two innings before the Chargers mustered a run off of two hits in the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Colby-Sawyer offense extended the lead to 6-0 plating five runs in the fourth, including a two-run single by Jarrett Lowe (Sudbury, Mass.) The Chargers tacked on two runs in the seventh and held the Pilgrims scoreless through seven eventually capturing the 8-0 victory.
Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer was Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) who was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Colby-Sawyer's Jarrett Lowe and Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) each singled twice and scored a run for the Chargers. Picking up the shutout win on the mound was Carter Malpass (Plymouth, Mass.) who allowed just four hits and struck out three.
Singling for the Pilgrims were Jimmy Hoyt (Rochester, N.H.), Joe Clark (Newcastle, Maine), Dan Pratt (Concord, N.H.) and Chris Gagne (Rochester, N.H.).
In game two, the Pilgrims jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Jimmy Hoyt doubled in Jimmy Lauzon (Manchester, N.H.) and eventually scored on a Scott Miller (Mt. Airy, Md.) single in the first inning. The Chargers answered back with three runs in the fourth and batted around plating six runs in the fifth to build a 9-3 lead. Colby-Sawyer extended the lead to 15-3 with three runs in the sixth and the seventh innings and held NEC to two runs in the seventh cruising to the 15-5 win.
Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer was Tom White who finished with three hits, including a three-run home run. Colby-Sawyer's Evan Leary (Concord, N.H.) and Chris Hartery finished with two hits and three runs scored, while Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, N.Y.) finished the game with four runs batted in. Picking up the win on the mound was Matt Rosa (Manchester, N.H.) who allowed two earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Chargers will celebrate senior day on Saturday, April 25 with a doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene beginning at noon.
