Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – March 19, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference tilt, 10-9, to Fitchburg State on a chilly Thursday afternoon. For the second straight year the Falcons scored in the final minute of the game to beat the Chargers by a goal.
BOXSCOREIn the 2015 home opener, the Chargers had to overcome an early 5-1 deficit. Colby-Sawyer battled back by scoring eight of the games next 11 goals. Senior
Nichole Danehy cut the early lead to 5-2 with her second goal of the season. After a Falcon goal, freshman
Nicole Lavigne tallied her third goal of the season to cut the lead to three.
The Falcons would score once more before the Chargers scored five straight. Down 7-3 with under five minutes remaining in the first half, Colby-Sawyer's
Molly Mulcahy and
Caitlyn Whearty each found the back of the net to bring the Chargers within two at the half.
In the second half, the Chargers were led by a three goal performance from junior
Sara Berry and a two point performance by senior
Alyssia Janak. Berry and Janak combined for four second half goals and an assist to help the Chargers overcome the two goal deficit at the half and take a late 9-8 lead on the Falcons.
The Falcons responded with two goals in the final 5:28 to down the Chargers 10-9. Sophomore Ali Laferriere (Tyngsboro, Mass.) tallied her third goal of the game with :21 left on the clock to give the Falcons the one goal advantage. Laferriere also dished out a pair of assists on the afternoon for Fitchburg.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Castellano posted 11 saves in the loss. The 11 saves marks the second straight game the sophomore has earned double digit saves.
Colby-Sawyer will open North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Maine Maritime Academy. The opening draw is scheduled for 1:00pm. Fitchburg travels to Rivier on Sunday for a non-conference tilt with the Raiders.
