Baseball Splits with Castleton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 11, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team earned a split with Castleton at Kelsey Field on Friday evening. After the Spartans took game one 11-4, the Chargers rallied for a walk-off 8-7 victory in eight innings in the night cap.

The Chargers go to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while Castleton goes to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer hosts Husson for four games over the weekend. Castleton travels to Thomas this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders.

Game One – Castleton 11, Colby-Sawyer 4 - BOX SCORE

Castleton received a strong six innings from freshman Steven Jurkiewicz (Essex Junction, Vt.) who earned his third win of the season.

The Spartans opened the scoring in their first at-bat on a RBI fielder's choice from sophomore Daniel Errico (West Hartford, Conn.).

Castleton doubled its lead in the third when a double steal resulted in a run from Tyler Lord (South Burlington, Vt.).

The visitors put the game out of reach with nine runs in the fourth inning. Senior Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.) had the big hit in the frame with a bases clearing double.

Senior Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) got Colby-Sawyer on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the fourth.

The Chargers would score three more times in the sixth, but fell 11-4.

Senior Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) went 3-for-3 for the Chargers in his season debut. Freshman Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass) had two hits in three at-bats.

Lord was 2-for-3 and scored a team high three runs out of the leadoff spot for Castleton. Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) and Chaz Millet (Enfield, Conn.) had two RBI apiece.

Game Two – Colby-Sawyer 8, Castleton 7 (8 inn.) - BOX SCORE

The Chargers struck for a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI double from senior Andy Lapple.

Colby-Sawyer increased its lead to 5-0 with four runs in the second. Six different Chargers recorded a hit in the frame.

Castleton slowly chipped away with a run in the third on a Tyler Lord RBI double to right center.

The visitors pulled within one after three runs in the top of the fourth. The first run came across on a sacrifice fly from Soren Pelz-Walsh (Dummerston, Vt.). Daniel Errico and Matt McNamee (Pawling, N.Y.) came around on RBI singles.

The game was even at 5-5 in the fifth after Allen White (Rutland, Vt.) knocked in Lord on a single.

Castleton took its first lead of the game in the sixth when Macyn Clifford recorded a run scoring double to right center.

The Spartans scored for the fifth straight inning in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Joe Borowski knocked in White with a sac fly to center field.

Trailing 7-5 in its last at-bat, Colby-Sawyer began the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Jon Wylie hit a dribbler to second base forcing the fielder to make his only play at second base. Senior Vinny Monahan (Foxboro, Mass.) and freshman Nathan Frongillo were able to score on the play to tie the game at 7-7.

After a scoreless top of the eighth, the Chargers received the game-winning hit from junior Brett Emmertz (Falmouth, Maine). Emmertz hit a soft fly over the second baseman's head to score senior Alex Fredette (Dover, N.H.) who began the inning with a single.

Freshman Michael Fazio (Auburn, Mass.) earned his second win of the season with 1.2 innings of relief.

Monahan had a team best three hits for the Chargers. Fredette, Emmertz and Lapple had two hits apiece.

Tyler Lord recorded three hits for the Spartans, while Errico and Nate Swahn (Rutland, Vt.) each had a pair.
