UMF and Colby-Sawyer Meet for NAC DH in Winter Haven, Fla.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – March 14, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team lost both ends of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader to the University of Maine-Farmington as the teams met in Winter Haven, Fla. on Friday afternoon. The Beavers took game one 3-2 and won game two 4-0.

UMF improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the NAC, while Colby-Sawyer ends its spring break trip 3-8 and are now 0-2 in conference play.

GAME ONE – UMF 3, Colby-Sawyer 2 - BOX SCORE

Maine-Farmington struck for a run in its first at-bat and was aided by a Charger miscue. Ben Keene led off the frame with a single to center and then later scored on a well placed ball by Tom Grady.

The Chargers pulled even in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Vinny Monahan reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second and third on a pair of sacrifices. Rob Wallace hit a fielder's choice to score Monahan to even the game at 1-1.

Colby-Sawyer was able to take a 2-1 advantage in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Jon Wylie, which scored Monahan.

With the score tied 2-2 and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Dustin McCrossin hit the game-winning single to left field to score Ben Keene.

Ben Keene and Sean Cabaniss each had a pair of hits for the Beavers.

Kyle Peterson pitched UMF to its first win of the season with a complete game two-hitter. He also struck out four.

Kevin Keith took the loss for the Chargers. He went the distance and gave up one earned run and struck out six. 

GAME TWO – UMF 4, Colby-Sawyer 0 - BOX SCORE

Joe Sullivan tossed a complete game shutout in game two to give UMF the sweep. He gave up six hits and struck out nine.

After three and a half scoreless innings, the Beavers got a run across in the fourth on a Sean Cabaniss RBI single to center field.

UMF built a 4-0 lead in their next at-bat with four straight singles in the fifth. Tom Grady and Grayson Beressi each knocked in a run. Grady also crossed the plate on a wild pitch later in the frame.

Vinny Monahan had a pair of hits for the Chargers.

Brett Wallingford, Grady, and Cabaniss had two hits apiece for UMF.

Colby-Sawyer returns to action on Thursday, March 20 with a single game at Gordon.
