Men's Soccer Headed to ECAC Semifinals

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 12, 2014 – Colby-Sawyer senior Carlton Wheeler-Omiunu (Bellingham, Mass.) scored 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Chargers past Albertus Magnus, 4-3 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Soccer quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 12-6-2 and advances to the ECAC semifinals for the first time in program history and will play the winner of top seed Norwich versus eighth seed Lesley on Saturday, November 15.  Albertus Magnus ends its season at 11-7-2.

Wheeler-Omiunu's game-winner came after fellow senior Chris DiCecca (Wilmington, Mass.) sent a through ball that led to a break-away. The Falcons keeper came out to challenge the play, but Wheeler-Omiunu finished into the cross corner of the goal.
The contest reached overtime after the two evenly match sides scored once in the first half and twice in the second.

The visitors got on the board first in the eighth minute when senior Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) was jostling with a defender in the box and ripped a shot that deflected off a Colby-Sawyer player.

Freshman Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) found the equalizer for the Chargers when he headed home a great service ball from the corner kick of Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand). The goal was Sexton's team leading 12th of the season.

Albertus Magnus wasted little time coming out of the half time break with a goal in the 51st minute. Leading goal scorer sophomore Alexis Garcia (West Haven, Conn.) scored off his own rebound into the short side of the net to give him 14 goals on the year.

Colby-Sawyer was able to tie the score at 2-2 in the 63rd minute. Wheeler-Omiunu was heading towards the end-line on the right side when he sent a cross towards the box. Junior Zach Anderson (Wilmington, Mass.) was there to head the ball past the keeper for his third of the season.

Wheeler-Omiunu was involved again in the 75th minute to give the Chargers their first lead of the match. After a yellow card was issued to an Albertus Magnus player, senior Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.) took a free kick from 35 yards out on the left flank. The ball went bending towards the goal and was headed by Wheeler-Omiunu for his third goal in the last two matches.

The Falcons responded with a match-tying tally in the 84th minute. Sophomore Alex Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) sent his corner kick towards the box where sophomore Matt Mueller (Cheshire, Conn.) was able to get a foot on the ball in traffic and score past the keeper.

Senior Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) made three saves in the win for Colby-Sawyer, while Albertus Magnus freshman keeper Griffin Volta (Orange, Conn.) had six stops for the Falcons.

Three of the Chargers' four goals came via the header. Colby-Sawyer held a 19-14 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
