Men's Soccer Scores Twice in Each Half to Defeat Maine Maritime, 4-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 11, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer College men's soccer team recorded its fourth straight clean sheet after a 4-0 victory over Maine Maritime on Saturday afternoon at Kelsey Field.

The teams last met in last year's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinals. Colby-Sawyer advanced to the championship after winning in penalty kicks.

The Chargers improve to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Colby-Sawyer travels to Green Mountain on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest with the Eagles. Maine Maritime drops to 7-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the NAC. The Mariners travel to Thomas next Saturday.

Freshman Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) put the Chargers on the board in the 10th minute after finishing a rebound after his initial shot was saved by freshman Marshall Spear (Rockport, Maine).

The Chargers doubled their lead with less than three minutes to play in the first half. Senior Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.) sent a ball into the box off a corner kick that was headed in by sophomore Rick Prindiville (Hooksett, N.H.).

Sexton was at it again in the second half as he scored at 60:28 into the cross corner of the goal off a feed from senior Chris DiCecca (Wilmington, Mass.).

Alex Ortega matched Sexton's fifth goal of the season, with his fifth in the 79th minute. Ortega ripped a shot from 20 yards that snuck in under the crossbar to give Colby-Sawyer the 4-0 win.

Colby-Sawyer senior Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) had five saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season. Spear finished with three saves for the Mariners.

Senior Gabriel Warren (Edgecomb, Maine) led the Mariners with two shots on goal.

The Chargers held a slim 13-11 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
