CASTLETON, Vt. - April 20, 2013 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team fell to Castleton, 20-10 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.
Amanda Flodstrom and Jessica Taplin headlined the Spartan offense, notching a combined 10 goals while dealing off a combined four assists. Kelsey McDonald made six saves in net, earning her second win of the season.
In the first half, Flodstrom, Mariah Lesure, and Kate Auer each scored goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to give the Spartans an early 3-1 lead over the Chargers. Colby-Sawyer rallied to go on a 4-0 run keyed by
Ashley Reis. The attacker scored two goals at the 23:44 mark and 21:09 mark to tie the game, followed by two more Charger scores to give the squad a 5-3 lead with 16:11 left in the first half.
Castleton stormed back to take the lead with goals from Taplin and Flodstrom just 1:03 apart, and with 6:09 left in the frame, Jennilee Mark put the Spartans up 6-5 with an unassisted strike past Colby-Sawyer goalie
Karley Hamilton.
Reis responded with a goal for the Chargers to tie the game at 6-6, and
Michelle Upham put the visitors ahead with a tally that came with 3:41 remaining. With 1:13 remaining, Taplin knotted the score again, and with just 12 seconds remaining Samantha Bonasera put one in, giving the Spartans an 8-7 advantage at the half.
In the second frame the Spartans took over, outshooting the Chargers 20-4, and outscoring the squad 12-3. Flodstrom triggered a 5-0 run to become the half with two goals in the first ten minutes of the frame. Kate Auer, Blake Wardwell, and Mariah Lesure each scored during the run, while the Spartans held the Chargers scoreless for the first 13:41 of the second half.
Carly Baker cut the Spartan lead to 13-8 when she converted a free position shot with 16:19 remaining in the game.
Laurel Bauer followed suit for the Chargers, scoring just 35 seconds later to cut the deficit to four goals, but that was as close as Colby-Sawyer would come. In the final 15 minutes of play, Castleton outscored the visitors 7-1 on their way to a 20-10 victory.
Ashley Reis finished with a team-high three goals for the Chargers, while Hamilton made 10 saves in the loss.

The Spartan defense was led by Cori Healy who scooped up a game-high seven ground balls and earned four caused turnovers. Bonasera grabbed five draw controls, while Jennilee Mark grabbed four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
The Spartans improve to 7-7 on the season, and maintain a perfect 6-0 mark within the NAC for the second consecutive year. The squad earned the top seed in the conference postseason tournament and will host the NAC Semifinal round on Saturday, Apr. 27. The Chargers fall to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play and will await seedings and matchups for the upcoming postseason tournament.
