SALEM, Mass. - March 27, 2013 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season in thrilling fashion with a 13-12 overtime victory over Salem State.
Senior
Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) scored her 100th career goal in the game.
The Chargers improve to 1-4, while the Vikings fall to 1-3 on the season.
Nichole Danehy (Billerica, MA) and
Kylie McDonnell (Quechee, VT) gave the Chargers an early 2-0 lead. The Vikings' Bridget Dullea (Peabody, MA) countered with a pair of goals to tie the game.
Colby-Sawyer's
Alyssia Janak (Bourne, MA) scored to put her team on top, and
Adrienne Bender (Wakefield, RI) followed it up with a goal of her own. Salem State responded once again with goals from Erin Riley (Wakefield, MA) and Dullea to tie it up at 4-4.
The half continued to be a back and forth contest that saw five more goals from both squads for a half time score of 9-9.
Kate Rial (Chester Springs, Pa.) scored quickly for the Chargers, and Kelsey Russell launched a shot past the goalie. Dullea scored her fifth goal for Salem State, and
Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) scored again for Colby-Sawyer. Regulation ended in an 11-11 tie.
In overtime, the Chargers'
Sara Berry (Bowdinham, ME) and Janak scored to give their team an insurmountable lead. Dullea would score for Salem State to bring the Vikings within 13-12, but they would run out of time in the extra frame.
Salem State's Alex Varoutos (Woburn, MA) had 12 saves, and Colby-Sawyer's
Karley Hamilton (Bradford, VT) also stopped 11 balls.
Dullea finished the game with seven goals, Russell has two goals and two assists and led the team with five ground balls. The Chargers were led by Bauer with two goals and two assists and a game high seven ground balls. Bauer moved into seventh on the Colby-Sawyer all-time career assists list with 32.
The Vikings' play at home again on Saturday at 1:00 PM against conference foe Westfield State. The Chargers will play at Norwich University on Friday at 4:00 PM.
