AUBURNDALE, Fla. - March 7, 2012 - The Wentworth baseball team rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 6-5 victory over former Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
The win improves the Leopards' record to 4-3, while Colby-Sawyer dips to 4-2. The Chargers return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader with Clark. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 am at Henley Field.
Wentworth sophomore hurler Ben Lewis went the distance and earned the win after giving up five runs, but they were all unearned as the Leopards committed six errors on the afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer's
Greg Doucette took the loss after surrendering two runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Conner Flisnik gave Wentworth a 1-0 lead with his first inning RBI single. The teams went scoreless over the next five innings before Colby-Sawyer struck for a pair in the top of the 7th. The Chargers lined into a double-play with the bases loaded to end the frame.
Colby-Sawyer increased its advantage with three more runs in the top of the 8th.
Andy Lapple hit an RBI single and was followed by a two-RBI single by
Justin Martin.
Wentworth responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Jon Spitz RBI single and a pinch-hit two-run single by Jake Mailman.
Lewis pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to give Wentworth a chance in their last at-bat. After the first two Leopards reached on a walk and a single, Scott Ouellette moved the runners up with a sac bunt. Paul Dassau then knocked in the tying run on a ground out to shortstop. The next batter, Alex Wong, hit a game-winning single to right field that scored Dakota Baird for the win.
