NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 17, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team began its 2011-12 season with a 67-56 victory over Norwich, on Thursday evening at the Hogan Sports Center.

The Chargers are 1-0, while Norwich drops to 0-2.

Junior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) filled out the stat sheet with 16 points, eight rebounds, and a game best five assists. Junior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) led Colby-Sawyer with 19 points.  Junior Stephanie Larpenter (Sunapee, N.H.) contributed 13 points off the bench. Sophomore Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added six points.

Norwich was led by senior Karissa Doyon (Beecher Falls, Vt.) who poured in a game-high 22 points. She added eight rebounds and was 10-10 from the free throw line. Freshman guard Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) scored 16 points. Freshman forward Katrina Laidlaw (Dunblane, Scotland) led the team with nine rebounds.

The Chargers held a 29-14 lead with five minutes to play in the first half before Norwich ended on a 12-3 run to trail 32-26 at the break. Doyon led all players in the first 20 minutes with 13 points, while Colby-Sawyer's Bullett and Larpenter each had 11.

Colby-Sawyer began the second the way they did the first, jumping out with a 9-3 run. The Chargers maintained a comfortable lead throughout the first 10 minutes, but Norwich, like they did in the first, went on a run to close the gap. Trailing 57-40, the Cadets battled back with a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to six. Colby-Sawyer responded with an 8-3 run in the final five minutes to put the game away. 

Colby-Sawyer is hosting a four-team classic over the weekend. The Chargers will play Me.-Machias on Saturday and Sage on Sunday. Norwich travels to Amherst to participate in their tip-off tournament. The Cadets will play tournament host Lord Jeffs on Saturday and either Mt. St. Mary or St. Lawrence on Sunday.
