Bats Come Alive in 20-9 Rout of Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – April 9, 2009 - Reigning TCCC Rookie of the Week Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) went 5-for-6 with three doubles, three runs scored and six runs batted in, and Matt Rosa (Manchester, N.H.) yielded just two unearned runs over 5.1 innings of relief to help spur Colby-Sawyer to a 20-9 victory over Norwich in a non-conference contest Thursday afternoon at Garrity Field.

The Chargers (9-13) scored nine runs over the final three innings to break open what was a close game.

Norwich (0-16-1) was led by Mitch Blair, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Aron Sweder and Greg Pawluk each connected with two base hits for the Cadets, with Sweder smashing a triple and Pawluk blasting a double.

Martin's two-run double highlighted Colby-Sawyer's three-run first inning as the Chargers jumped on top 3-0. Blair's run-scoring triple kick-started Norwich's three-run first, which tied the game at 3-3 after the opening frame.

Another two-run double for Martin helped the Chargers plate three more runs in the top half of the second inning as the visitors took a 6-3 lead. Once again, Norwich came right back in the bottom of the frame as the Cadets scored four times to take a 7-6 lead after two innings. Sean Stone's two-run triple and Blair's sacrifice fly were the key hits in the four-run inning.

Colby-Sawyer went in front for good in the top of the third inning as the Chargers pushed across two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies. CSC loaded the bases with no outs, but had to settle for just the two runs after some nice pitching by Norwich's Kyle Lighter.

Chris Hartery's (Billerica, Mass.) two-run home run ignited Colby-Sawyer's three-run fifth inning as the Chargers opened up an 11-7 lead. The Cadets got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth when the scored a pair of unearned runs.

After a scoreless sixth inning, CSC added four runs in the seventh. The Chargers tacked on two more in the eighth and three in the ninth to close out the scoring.
