NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 10, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers baseball team overcame a 7-2 deficit and scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with an 8-7 victory over the visiting Owls of Maine Presque Isle on Friday afternoon. The win pushes the Chargers' record to 10-13 while the Owls fall to 9-15.
Maine Presque Isle scored three runs in the top of the first inning with two outs to get on the board first. Junior DJ Charette (Millinocket, Maine), freshman Tyson Tash (Chester, Maine) and junior Corey Harding (Plymouth, Maine) each recorded an RBI single in the inning.
The Chargers got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the first on RBI singles from senior Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) and junior Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.).
The Owls answered right back in the top of the second by scoring three more runs to take a 6-2 lead. Senior Brandon Elie (Auburn, Maine) knocked in a pair of runs with a double and then scored on a balk. UMPI tacked on another run in the third on an RBI double from sophomore Seth Dorr (Hodgdon, Maine).
UMPI held a five-run lead into the bottom of the sixth before Colby-Sawyer cut the lead to two. RBI singles from junior Jarrett Lowe (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Brandon McFadden (Dummerstown, Vt.) kept the Chargers in the game. Lowe scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The Chargers rallied again in the bottom half of the seventh inning with a lead off single from freshman Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.). Mehuron scored the Chargers' sixth run on a pass ball. After a groundout and a walk, Tom White roped a triple to left center to knock in senior Chris Gaeta (Lynn, Mass.) with the game-tying run. Hartery ended the game with a walk-off single to center that scored White, giving the Chargers the 8-7 come from behind victory.
Sophomore Mike Bertuccio (Millstone Township, N.J.), who earned the victory for the Chargers, threw four shutout innings of relief and surrendered just two hits. Elie took the loss for the Owls.
Game two of the doubleheader was called a no contest in the fifth inning after an unfortunate head on collision involving UMPI's center and right fielders as they both dove for the ball.
