PAXTON, Mass. – March 31, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team earned a split with Anna Maria in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The AMCATS took game one by a score of 9-3 before senior Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) drove in three runs in game two to lift the Chargers to an 8-3 win. The split moves the AMCATS to 8-12 on the year and 4-4 in the Conference, while the Chargers' record now stands at 5-11 overall and 2-5 in TCCC play.
Sophomore Andy Fallon (Worcester, Mass.) paced the AMC offensive attack going 5-8 in the double-dip with two runs scored and three RBI, while junior JK Vaughn (Simsbury, Conn.) added three hits and four RBI. Junior Pete Labelle (Gardner, Mass.) also played well, going 2-3 with three runs scored in game one alone. Freshman Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) earned his first collegiate win in game one, pitching five strong innings while surrendering just one earned run and striking out seven. Freshman Tim Henderson (Wayland, Mass.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to close out the first game, earning the first save of his collegiate career.
Tom White led the Chargers with three hits and three RBI over the two games, while Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) went 3-5 with two RBI. Freshman Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) and senior Chris Gaeta (Lynn, Mass.) each collected two hits apiece. Freshman Ryan Gillan (Alton, N.H.) closed out game two in impressive fashion, tossing three shutout innings to earn his first collegiate win.
In game one, the AMCATS took an early lead with three runs on four hits in the top of second. Sophomore Brendon Tivnan (Worcester, Mass.) had an RBI walk in the inning, while Fallon delivered a two-run single to left center.
The Chargers fought back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Jarrett Lowe (Sudbury, Mass.) got the scoring started for CSC with an RBI double off the third base bag to score freshman Justin Martin. Sophomore Brandon McFadden (Dummerston, Vt.) came around to score later in the inning on a two-out error by AMC, cutting the Anna Maria lead to 3-2.
After both teams traded runs in the sixth, Anna Maria broke the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh. Junior JK Vaughn (Simsbury, Conn.) drove in two of the runs with a two out single to help break things open, as the AMCATS went on to take game one, 9-3.
In game two, the Chargers struck for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. Tom White and junior Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) each had RBI singles while Justin Martin drove in two runs with a double to right.
The AMCATS clawed their way back with one run in third inning and two more in the fourth to close the gap to 4-3. Junior Jeff Lander (Gloucester, Mass.) had an RBI single up the middle in the third, while JK Vaughn and sophomore Jeff Kodys (Holden, Mass.) each drove in runs in the fourth.
The Chargers struck for four more runs in the sixth as Mehuron and Gaeta each had RBI singles. Tom White drove in the final two runs on a base hit to center to help solidify the 8-3 win.
Colby-Sawyer will play again on Thursday when they host Rivier College at 3:30 pm. The AMCATS will take the field again on Wednesday, traveling to take on New England College in a TCCC doubleheader starting at 2:30 pm.
