Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt –The Chargers split a double header against the Norwich University Cadets. Sophomore
Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) lead the way for the Chargers split, pitching a gem in the second game of the doubleheader.
Rapid Recap Game One (6-9):
- The two teams remained in a standstill during the first three innings.
- The Cadets opened the scoring in the bottom half of the third. Brock Carpenter got them on the board with a single to left center field which was just the start. They would score 8 more runs on three singles and three doubles giving the home team a 9-0 lead.
- Graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) got the Chargers on the board scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.
- Sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) tripled to right field, scoring both Watson and first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) cutting the Cadets lead to six. O'Brien then continued the offense with a two-run homer scoring Carignan, getting the Chargers to within four runs.
- Watson singled up the middle in the eighth, scoring sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) leaving the Cadets with a 9-6 lead going into the last frames.
On The Mound:
- Senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) tossed two and two-thirds innings, giving up nine runs on twelve hits, as well tallying a strikeout and walk. Junior Kenneth Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y.) was the first out of the bullpen for the Chargers, throwing three and one-third innings, allowing three hits, while also walking three. First year Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H) and sophomore Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) threw an inning each, tallying a strikeout each too.
At the Plate;
- O'Brien went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk, a stolen base, and home run. Carignan also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk. Watson continued the 2-for-4 trend with an RBI and walk.
Rapid Recap Game 2 (9-5):
- The Chargers opened the scoring fast as Carignan doubled in Watson in the first inning. O'Brien would then single allowing Carignan to cross home plate.
- Watson would then double down the right field line, scoring sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H) and McLeer. Carignan would reach base on an error by the shortstop, allowing Watson to score and Carignan to advance to second. O'Brien would plate the fourth unearned run of the fourth inning, doubling to right center.
- Sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) hit a home run in the top of the fifth inning, scoring first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H).
- O'Brien would get himself into a pickle ending up out, which allowed Carignan to plate the ninth run for the Chargers in the top of the eighth, going into the bottom up 9-0.
- The Cadets would score a run in the bottom of the eighth on a groundout to second base.
- In the bottom of the ninth, the Cadets would plate four more runs to try and continue their fight. The runs were scored on two singles and two sacrifice flies.
On the Mound:
- Watson pitched a marvelous eight innings of work picking up the win for the Chargers, allowing just one run on four hits, striking out six, and walking three. This marked the fourth win of the season for Watson. Junior Josh Finkle (Littelton, N.H) came out of the bullpen next, going a third of an inning, allowing four runs on four hits, and walking one batter. Junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) finished the last two thirds of the game for the Chargers, giving up just one hit.
At the Plate:
- Watson went 3-for-5, tallying two RBIs on the night and scoring two runs. Carignan went 2-for-4 again, walking once and tallying another RBI. Cruz hit his first collegiate home run, while going 1-for-4, tallying a walk and two RBIs.
