Chargers 2-0 in New London with Dominant Win Over Vikings

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up their second victory in New London on Saturday defeating Salem State University by a 14-2 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers attacked early finding their first score in the first minute of the game with graduate student Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) scoring off of a dime from sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.). Junior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) kept the home team rolling pushing pace off of a Vikings turnover to find teammate Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) to put the Chargers up 2-0. Graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) struck next blowing by her defender to score the third goal and her 100th career point. The Vikings would look to strike back with Jenna Wells registering a score to end the first quarter.
  • The home squad would quickly extend their lead in the second quarter with Hanson and Kuhlthau notching back to back goals feeding each other off of draw control wins. Six minutes later Ponzini would find her own goal off of a fast paced clear. The two teams would go on to battle in the midfield forcing turnovers and picking up ground balls but with 55 seconds remaining in the half Hanson would send the home team into halftime with a 8-1 lead.
  • The third period started in favor of the Vikings with a dominant win of the draw control and fast feed to Laura Young to bring the score within six. The midfield duo of Hanson-Kuhlthau would take this goal personally and explode one minute later with a goal scored by Kuhlthau off of a feed from Hanson. Hanson would continue to maintain high pressure in the attacking zone causing a turnover on a clear attempt and setting herself up for a score off of pass from Marquis. The first year attacking partners Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine) and Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) took their turn making a stunning play, with Finlayson pulling the defense out and feeding a cutting Smith for the 11th goal of the afternoon. Shortly after Hanson would pay the assist forward and feed Finlayson for a score ending the third period Chargers 12, Vikings 2.
  • The fourth quarter saw action for the more Chargers as senior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) stepped into net while sophomore Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) scored within the first two minutes from a beautiful feed from first year Gracie Pizon (Stratham, N.H.). The final score of the game would come from an almost perfectly executed dive from Hanson fed from first year Lexi Shute (Gilford, N.H.) who notched her first career assist.

Inside The Numbers: 
  • Hanson led the offense for the Chargers registers seven points from five goals and two assists. Hanson added seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Kuhlthau followed with four points on the day off of a hat trick of goals and one assist which were supported by three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Finlayson also packed the stat sheet earning two points off of one goal and one assist, tallying four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Marquis highlighted the day notching her 100th career point off of an early goal but also register one assist, one ground ball and one caused turnover.
  • Junior Hannah Himes (Essex, Vt.) led the defense with five caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up collegiate win number 24 making two saves. Senior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) picked up three saves on the day.
  • Wells and Young paced the Vikings with a goal apiece.

The Chargers will be back at home to take on their first GNAC Conference match up against the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday March 16th with a 1:00 PM start.
