Men's Volleyball Takes Two from NVU-Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. - January 25, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team won both of its matches against Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Saturday. The Chargers won 3-1 and 3-0.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 4-3 and will play at Dean on Feb. 1. The Badgers drop to 0-3. 

In the first match, Colby-Sawyer won by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 and 26-24. 

The Chargers were led by Orlando Plagata's team high 12 kills and 11 digs. Eric Miller added 11 kills and seven digs. Andrew Kovacs hit .833 to finish with five kills. AJ Gnieski contributed 27 assists, nine digs and four aces. 

Ryan Willette led the Badgers with a match-high 13 kills and nine digs. Jesse Streeter added seven kills, two blocks, and two digs. Dominic Phelps added six kills and two digs. Jason Madrid recorded a team high 24 assists.

It was back and forth in the first set of action until a service error from the Badgers ignited a run mid-way through the set to give the Chargers the 14-11 lead. Th Chargers contained the lead throughout the remainder of action and took the first set by a score of 25-17.

The Badgers opened up the second set on a 10-6 run. The Chargers ended up knotting the score at 16-16. Both teams traded points until two service aces and a kill from Phelps propelled the Badgers to the win by a score of 25-22. 

Colby-Sawyer began the third on a 4-1 spurt and never looked back on the way to a 25-18 win. The Badgers would get as close as three later in the set, but the Chargers cruised to the seven-point win. 

In the fourth, Colby-Sawyer trailed 22-19, but scored five of the next six points to take a 24-23 lead. The home team tied the set on a Willette kill before Colby-Sawyer ended the frame and the match with kills by Plagata and Mikey Guzman. 

In the second match, the Chargers won 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17. 

Orlando Plagata paced Colby-Sawyer once again with a match best nine kills. Giovani Dos Reis registered eight kills on .571 hitting to go with eight digs. Aj Gnieksi finished the day running the offense with 17 assists. 

Michael Weston led the Badgers with seven kills. Ryan Willette added five kills and four digs. Jason Madrid tallied 16 assists.

The Chargers opened up the first set on a 6-2 run. The Badgers battled back and came within two points but two consecutive service aces from Plagata fueled the Chargers to a 25-14 victory in set one. 

Set two continued saw the Chargers remain control as they opened up the set on a 14-6 run and didn't look back going on an 11-8 run to close the set winning 25-14. 

In the final set, Colby-Sawyer took a commanding 14-5 lead, but the Badgers battled back within five thanks to a couple of Streeter kills and Colby-Sawyer miscues. The Chargers halted the run and cruised to the 25-17 win.
