FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Colby-Sawyer women's rugby 7's team was back in action on Saturday with four matches at the Pioneer 7's tournament hosted by Sacred Heart University.
The Chargers will wrap up the spring 7's schedule on Saturday, April 20 at Bowdoin College. Â
COLBY-SAWYER vs. LIU - L, 17-19
Sydney Jackson gave the Chargers a 5-0 lead early in the first half and
Julia Anhalt converted the kick to put Colby-Sawyer on top 7-0. LIU then rattled off 19 consecutive points to close out the first half with a 19-7 lead.
The Chargers did the scoring in the second half with tries from
Jordyn Enos and
Bailey Burt, but it was not enough as LIU's 19 points held for the 19-17 win.
COLBY-SAWYER vs. SACRED HEART - W, 12-10
Colby-Sawyer earned a win over the Pioneers for the second-straight tournament. After Sacred Heart scored 10 points in the first half, Colby-Sawyer responded with 12 in the second to come away with the 12-10 victory.
Jordyn Enos and
Bailey Burt each had a try and
Julia Anhalt added a conversion. Â
COLBY-SAWYER vs. NORWICH - T, 10-10
Erin Wholey opened the match with a try, which was answered by a Norwich try before the halftime horn sending the contest into the break tied at 5-5.
The second half mirrored the first as Colby-Sawyer scored the first try, thanks to powering run by
Jess Burt, but Norwich found the tying try with 1:19 left in the second to make the score 10-10.
COLBY-SAWYER vs. MOLLOY - W, 15-10 – Consolation Final
The Chargers avenged a close loss to the Lions two weeks ago by outlasting Molloy 15-10 in overtime.
Molloy got the only try in the first half to take a 5-0 lead.
Jordyn Enos continued her great play with a match-tying try early in the second half.
With 2:40 left to play, Molloy took a 10-5 lead.
As time was winding down,
Sydney Jackson pulled the Chargers even with a try.
Enos scored the game-winning try in overtime to send the Chargers home with the 15-10 victory. Â Â
"Our player of the tournament was
Sydney Jackson," said head coach
Ken Pape. "Her defensive pressure and consistent tackling caused the opposition to turn the ball over several times."
