Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Castleton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CASTLETON, Vt. - April 21, 2014 - The Castleton baseball team took two games from Colby-Sawyer in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

Allen White went 2-for-4 with a home run over the course of the two games, Matt McNamee went 3-for-6 from the plate, including a double, and Dan Errico went 2-for-5 with a solo bomb to spur the Castleton offense to the win. 

Conner Johnson pitched his third complete game of the season, earning a shutout as he silenced the Colby-Sawyer bats. Johnson tossed seven innings and struck out as many batters as he allowed baserunners. The sophomore fanned six while giving up just four hits and two walks.

In game two, Luke Salerno earned his third win of the season going six innings and allowing a pair of earned runs. The freshman scattered eight hits and struck out five without giving up a walk. T.J. Fearon earned the save, retiring three straight batters to get out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh.

In game one, Castleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Tyler Lord and Allen White each hit RBI singles to put the squad ahead. In the fifth, White drilled a solo home run down the right field line, easily clearing the fence to make it 3-0. Soren Pelz-Walsh tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to make it 4-0. 

Johnson closed out the complete game with a scoreless seventh, retiring the last five batters he faced. The sophomore earned his third win of the season, improving to 3-0 on the year. 

In game two, the Spartans jumped on the Chargers' starting pitcher Mike Peters, cashing in a pair of runs in the top of the first. After White and Joe Borowski each drew walks, Dan Errico reached on a fielding error, bringing in White. The next batter, McNamee ripped a single to drive in Borowski, making it 2-0. 

Castleton added a run in the third when Dan Errico unloaded on a pitch, sending it flying over the left field fence to put the Spartans ahead 3-0. In the fourth, Jimmy Buckley led off the inning with a double and came around to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Lord, giving the home team a 4-0 lead.

Colby-Sawyer threatened to tie the game in the seventh, loading the bases on three straight singles. Kyle Greenwood ripped an RBI single with the bases loaded that made it 4-1 and chased Salerno from the game with all three runners on base charged to him. With the game on the line, the Spartans turned to closer T.J. Fearon to get them out of the jam. The sophomore forced an infield fly, and a pair of weak grounders to third, allowing just one run to close out the game as the Spartans won 4-2. 

Nathan Frongillo and TJ O'Connor each had three hits for the Chargers.
