Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 18, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped a pair of close North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games to Lyndon State on Friday at Kelsey Field. The Hornets won by scores of 6-4 and 3-2.
Lyndon, who is coached by 2009 Colby-Sawyer graduate Tom White, improves to 7-7 in the NAC and will host Castleton for a twin bill tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. White finished his Colby-Sawyer career as one of the best baseball players to ever don a Chargers uniform. He still ranks first all-time in doubles (39) and ranks second all-time in hits (164), runs (119) and stolen bases (40). He sits in third place all-time in walks with 59 and RBI with 133. White also finished his career in fourth place on the all-time career homerun list with 19. Greg Mehuron '12 is an assistant coach on the team.
Colby-Sawyer drops to 1-7 in conference play and will face Maine-Farmington tomorrow at noon. The games will be played at Bates College.
Game One – Lyndon 6, Colby-Sawyer 4 -
BOX SCOREBoth teams were held hitless through the first three innings before Lyndon's Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) hit a single up the middle in the top of the fourth. The Hornets were set down in order after the knock.
The Chargers did not record a hit until the bottom half of the fifth when they pushed two runs across to take the lead.
Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.) drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the game's first run.
Brett Emmertz (Falmouth, Maine) knocked in the second run with a single to right field.
Lyndon responded with four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the sixth. Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) had a RBI single to right in the inning.
Colby-Sawyer came back in their half of the sixth to tie the game with a pair of runs.
TJ O'Connor (Bethel, Maine) drove in a run and
Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) scored on a double steal.
The Hornets went in front 6-4 in the top of the seventh on a two-run single from Mike Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.).
Mason Brewer (Wicasset, Maine) went the distance for the Hornets to earn his second win of the season. He gave up four hits and struck out five.
Michael Fazio (Auburn, Mass.) suffered his first loss for the Chargers after surrendering a pair of runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
Mike Bowse (Merrimack, N.H.) went the first 5.2 innings and gave up a pair of earned runs. He recorded his sixth pickoff of the season.
Game Two – Lyndon 3, Colby-Sawyer 2 -
BOX SCORELyndon jumped in front with three runs in their first at-bat. The team recorded four hits and benefited from an error in the frame. Tyler Pelletier and Mike Cartularo had run producing singles in the inning.
After the first inning, Colby-Sawyer pitcher
Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) settled down and allowed just one batter over the minimum for the remainder of the game. He tossed a complete game and struck out seven in the loss.
The Hornets' hurler, Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), earned the complete game victory. He gave up four hits and had a couple of strikeouts.
Brett Emmertz had a RBI fielder's choice in the third inning for the Chargers, while
Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) drove in Colby-Sawyer's second run of the game with a single to left field.
