Lacrosse Falls to Salem State 11-10 in Overtime

Box Score SALEM, Mass. - March 8, 2014 – The Colby Sawyer women's lacrosse team overcame a 9-1 halftime deficit to force overtime, but fell to Salem State 11-10 Saturday morning at Alumni Field. The victory gives the Vikings (1-1) their first win of the year and drops the Chargers to 0-1 on the season.

Katie Hart (Beverly, MA) struck first for Salem State when she tore down the middle for a Vikings' goal. Emily Riley(Wakefield, MA) scored the team's second goal when she rocketed in a shot across the net. Kelly Tanner(Wellesley, MA), who netted a hat-trick, made it a 3-0 Vikings lead. Riley scored her second goal, and Tanner netted back-to-back goals, while Kristina Ventura (Billerica, MA) added another score to make it 7-0 Vikings. Michelle Upham (Chelsea, VT) put Colby-Sawyer on the board, but Salem State's Kelsey Russell (Arlington, MA) answered, making it 8-1 going into the half.

Kellie Lander (Ossipee, NH) replaced Chargers goaltender Megan Castellano (Wallingford, CT) in the second, and Caitlyn Whearty (Hampstead, NH) scored two quick goals while Carly Baker (Beverly, MA) notched a score to put Colby-Swayer back in the game. Russell added her second goal of the day as did Hart that extended the lead to 10-4. However, the Chargers mounted a furious comeback over the final 14 minutes, scoring six unanswered goals, to tie the game and force overtime. Maryalice Gurnee (South Portland, ME), Whearty, Baker, and Upham, who scored two more goals, made it a 10-9 game, and Alyssia Jannak (Bourne, MA) tied it up with 2:00 left.

The game would go to overtime and Salem's Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.) would score in the first 3:00 period to secure an 11-10 Salem State win.

Salem State freshman Chyenne Jackson (Peabody, MA) had 11 saves, and Colby-Sawyer's goalies combined to stop 11 balls.

The Chargers will play at Roger Williams on Wednesday at 4:00 PM. The Vikings play again at Mount Ida on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
