Men's Soccer Secures Top Spot in the NAC with 6-0 Win at UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine – October 26, 2014 - The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team defeated UMaine-Farmington, 6-0 Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field to lock up the top spot in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) standings. Alex Ortega nets hat-trick in win.

Colby-Sawyer improved to 11-4-2 overall and are the No. 1 seed in the NAC tournament that starts next week with a 7-1-1 record. The Chargers travel to Wheaton on Tuesday for a regular season finale.

With the shutout victory today, the Chargers set a single season record with nine clean sheets.

The Chargers took the lead late in the first half when Alex Ortega found the back of the net in the 31st minute. Denali Sexton sent a cross into the left inside of the box and Ortega lined a shot into the right side of the goal to give CSC the 1-0 edge.

Denali Sexton doubled the Chargers lead five minutes later when he beat the Beavers defense with fancy footwork and ball play. Sexton attacked from the left side and forced UMF keeper Ronie Morales to commit to the ball. Once Morales attempted for a save, Sexton booted a grounder past Morales into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Chris DiCecca increased the lead to 3-0 just 52 seconds into the second half after getting an assist from Max Yee. Ortega added two more goals for the hat trick in the 51st and 63rd minute.

Ortega now has 28 career goals and 71 career points, which ranks him second all-time in each category.

Isaac Nichols scored the final goal in the 85th minute to give the Chargers the final 6-0 margin of victory.

The Beavers best scoring chance came late in the first half. Jordan Luks sent a cross through the Chargers defense to Austin Dooley, but Dooley's shot sailed high.

Ronie Morales saved nine shots for the Beavers and finishes the season with 114 saves, tying him for the fifth best season in UMF history. Nick Austin made seven stops in earning his ninth clean sheet of the season and 17th of his career.
