Chargers Earn 73-68 Come From Behind Victory over UMF

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 10, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team rallied from a five-point half time deficit to defeat the University of Maine-Farmington, 73-68 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tilt Friday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-6 overall and 4-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will host Thomas at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Beavers fall to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play and will head down I-89 to face New England College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer junior Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) hit a pair of clutch jumpers with time winding down on the shot clock to keep a slim lead over the Beavers in the waning moments. UMF junior Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) did his best to give the visitors a chance with five points in the final minute of play, but a pair of Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) free throws put the game away for the Chargers 73-68.

Thok led four Colby-Sawyer players in double figures with 16 points. He was 4-9 from the floor and made all six of his free throw attempts. Sophomore Jake Maynard (Shelburne, Vt.) added 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Junior Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) had 12, while Majong scored 11. Senior Stephen Thorpe (Chicago, Ill.) had a game-high five steals and moved into eighth place on Colby-Sawyer's all-time steals list.

UMF was led by senior Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). He poured in a game best 20 points on 7-10 shooting. Sumner scored 16 points, while senior Garrett Clemmer (Windham, Maine) contributed 10. Senior Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) recorded a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Despite UMF shooting 52.3% from the floor for the game, the Chargers were able to take advantage of UMF miscues, scoring 31 points on 28 turnovers.

The game got off to a messy start as neither team could find an offensive flow. The teams combined for one bucket in the opening 3:37. UMF eventually found the range and led by eight at 14-6 at 11:43. Colby-Sawyer responded with a 9-0 run to take its only lead of the first frame at 15-14. With the game tied at 27-27 with less than five minutes to play in the frame, the Beavers scored seven straight capped by an Andrew Dickey layup. A Jake Maynard jumper pulled the Chargers within five as the home team trailed 34-29 at the break.

Johnson nearly recorded a double-double in the first half alone with 10 points and nine rebounds. UMF shot 52.4% from the floor in the first half and held a 17-13 edge on the glass. Colby-Sawyer was able to stay close by forcing 16 Beaver turnovers, which resulted in 14 points.
