HENNIKER, N.H. - April 8, 2013 -Colby-Sawyer College baseball swept two North Atlantic Conference games against New England College Monday afternoon, winning in game one 8-1 and game two by a score of 4-1.
With the wins the Chargers improve to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in NAC play. The losses drop the Pilgrims to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in the NAC.
GAME 1 - CSC 8 NEC 1
In game one Colby-Sawyer would jump out to the early lead plating three runs in the opening inning.
Alex Fredette (Dover, N.H.) and
Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.) would open the game with back-to-back singles followed by a
Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.) walk to load the bases. Fredette would score the first Charger run on a passed ball followed by Stotz and Knight who would both come around to score on a double off the bat of Vinny Monanhan (Foxboro, Mass.).
The Chargers would add a run in the second as Fredette would draw a two out walk and Stotz would then come through with a double to right field scoring Fredette.
NEC would get their lone run of the game in home half of the third inning as Francesco DiRi (Barrington, R.I.) would open the inning with a single, advance to second on a ground out and score on a Scott Fortune (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) double.
Colby-Sawyer would tack on three more runs in the fourth thanks to five Charger hits and add an unearned run in the fifth en route to the 8-1 victory.
Picking up the complete game victory on the mound for Colby-Sawyer was
Mike Bowse (Tewksbury, Mass.) who allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out four.
Leading the way at the plate for the Chargers was
Tyler Stotz who finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
GAME 2 - CSC 4 NEC 1
In game two it would be the Pilgrims who would strike first plating a run in the home half of the second inning. Christopher Smith (Raynham, Mass.) would reach on a one out error, advance to second on a Matthew Krum (Paramus, N.J.) single and come around to score on a Myles Comeau (Avon, Mass.) single up the middle.
The Charges would knot the game at 1-1 in the fifth as
Jake Szulak (Middleboro, Mass.) would lead off the inning with a single, pinch runner
Shawn McCarthy (North Waterboro, Maine) would then advance to third on a double by
TJ O'Connor (Bethel, Maine) and come around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Alex Fredette.
Colby-Sawyer would take the lead in the sixth inning scoring three runs highlighted by a two-run double by
Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.). NEC would threaten in both the sixth and the seventh inning but Colby-Sawyer would force the Pilgrims to strand six runners on base over the two innings to hold on for the 4-1 victory.
Picking up the win on the mound for Colby-Sawyer was
Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.) who gave up eight Pilgrim hits while striking out three.
Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) came in to get the final two outs of the game to pick up the save.
Five different Chargers collected hits in game two, including Greenwood and O'Connor who each doubled.
Colby-Sawyer begins a twelve game home stretch Thursday when they host Lyndon State for a North Atlantic double header. The first pitch is set for 2:00pm.
