Baseball Earns Split With Husson in Saturday Double Header

BANGOR, Maine - April 6, 2013 - Colby-Sawyer baseball split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games against Husson on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won the first by a score of 1-0, but fell in game two 8-5.

Game 1 - Colby-Sawyer 1, Husson 0

The two teams played through five scoreless innings before Cameron Knight hit a solo shot over the left field fence with one out in the top of the sixth to give the Chargers the 1-0 lead.

Kevin Keith pitched an eight hit, two strikeout complete game.

The Eagles were led by Jordan Carter and Brandon Gendreau on the offensive side as both batters went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Game 2 - Husson 8, Colby-Sawyer 5

Husson got off to a fast start in the first game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off the bat of Shawn Smith. Pat Thibodeau reached on an error by the second baseman. Smith followed with a triple into the left center gap that brought Thibodeau around from first base.

The Chargers knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second off the RBI double by T.J. O'Connor. Cameron Knight gave Colby-Sawyer the 2-1 lead in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to left field, which brought Sean Gavin across the plate.

In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles retook the lead after scoring four runs. Dylan Foster reached base on balls. Gendreau hit a single to left field that sent Foster to third after phenomenal base running. With one out, Thibodeau singled through the left side, scoring Foster on the play. With two down, J.T. Whitten hit the first home run of his career over the left field fence for the final three RBI of the inning.

The Chargers scored another run in the top of the fourth off a Jeff Dunn triple that scored Vinny Monahan.

Shawn Smith added to the Husson lead in the bottom fifth off a three run home run, scoring Thibodeau and Gendreau.

Colby-Sawyer rallied back in the top of the seventh, adding two runs off a Matt Muldoon single to right center that was just out of glove reach of Pat Thibodeau. Monahan struck out with two outs and a runner on first to end the game.

Sean Gavin and Tyler Stotz led the Chargers' offense. Gavin went 1-3 at the plate scoring a pair of runs while Stotz went 2-4 and one run. PJ Singster threw a complete game, giving up eight runs on nine hits while striking out two.

Tim Nason went five solid innings for Husson, allowing two earned runs with two walks and a strike out. Zachary Yates came in for the sixth in relief as he went one, two, three. Kyle Bishop  closed out the game, allowing two earned runs on three hits with two strike outs and a walked batter.

The Chargers return to Husson tomorrow afternoon for a North Atlantic Conference double header at 11 & 1:30 PM.
