Plymouth Takes Two from Baseball

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 21, 2013 – The Colby-Sawyer College baseball was swept by Plymouth in a nonconference twin bill on Sunday. The Panthers took game one 7-0 and followed with a 6-1 win in game two.

Plymouth improves to 16-15, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 13-15.

GAME ONE – Plymouth 7, Colby-Sawyer 0

Plymouth scored six times to open the game. The team recorded five singles and turned three free passes into runs. Sophomore Dan Armstrong (Danville, N.H.) had a two-run single in the inning.

The Panthers added an unearned run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single from senior Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, N.H.).
Plymouth senior Steve Beard (Middletown, Mass.) had a team best three hits and two runs scored.

Colby-Sawyer senior Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.) went 2-for-3.

Junior pitcher Jeff Runnals (Wolfeboro, N.H.) threw six shutout innings to earn his fourth win of the season.

Freshman Mike Bowse (Tewksbury, Mass.) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up six runs in six innings.

GAME TWO – Plymouth 6, Colby-Sawyer 1

Plymouth jumped in front 3-0 after turning four walks into three runs in the top of the third.

Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when junior Kyle Greenwood (Lyndonville, Vt.) scored on a wild pitch.

The Panthers responded in their next at bat with a run on a Steve Beard (Middletown, Mass.) RBI triple to the right field fence.

Plymouth tacked on two more in the top of the seventh to take a 6-1 lead. Freshman Jeff Broom (New London, N.H.) and senior Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) had back-to-back run scoring singles in the inning.

Plymouth's Broom, McIntosh and junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) each recorded two hits in the game.

Senior Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.) and Greenwood had two hits apiece for the Chargers.

Sophomore hurler Michael Welch (Westfield, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the season after tossing six innings. He gave up one run on five hits and struck out four. Junior Spencer Webb (Warwick, R.I.) surrendered one hit in an inning of relief.

Colby-Sawyer freshman Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.) took the loss in six innings of work.

Colby-Sawyer will host Lyndon on Monday for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at 2:00 pm.  Plymouth plays a Little East contest at Keene on Tuesday with a first pitch at 3:30 pm.
