Volleyball Wins Both NAC Matches on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 5, 2013 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team won both of its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matches, on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers earned a 3-0 win over Husson and followed with a 3-0 win over Maine Maritime. 

Colby-Sawyer improves to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in the NAC, while Husson drops to 7-13 overall and 0-1 in the conference and Maine Maritime falls to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in NAC play.

Colby-Sawyer 3, Husson 0 – 25-6, 25-12, 25-10 - BOX SCORE

Colby-Sawyer scored 11 of the first 12 points in the first set behind strong serving from junior Sarah Hannon (Pocasset, Mass.). The Chargers continued a balanced offensive attack throughout the first frame and hit .609 en route to a 25-6 win.

The second set was played closely through the midway point with Colby-Sawyer holding a slim 9-8 advantage. A 7-2 spurt created separation for the Chargers who went in front 16-10 and never looked back. Hannon was at it again and served seven of the Chargers' final eight points in the 25-12 second set victory.

The third set was much of the same for the Colby-Sawyer offense. The Chargers hit .474 in the set and finished the match with a .455 hitting percentage. Trailing 13-3, the Eagles tried to muster some offense and scored a few points in a row, but the Colby-Sawyer attack was too much. The Chargers ran away with a 25-10 third set win.

Senior Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) collected a match-high 11 kills on .588 hitting. Junior Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island, N.Y.) also reached double-figures with 10 kills on .500 hitting. Sophomore Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) had 41 assists, while senior Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) recorded a match best 20 digs.

Husson was led by freshman Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, Maine). She had five kills and five digs. Freshman setter Casey Lopes (New Bedford, Mass.) tallied nine assists and four digs.

The first set featured three ties before the Chargers pulled away with a 10-4 run to win 25-14.

Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 10-4 run to open the second set, capped by a pair of Sarah Hannon, forcing a Mariners timeout. The team traded the next few points, but the Chargers once again finished strong with a 10-2 run to take set two 25-12.

Maine Maritime held a lead 13 points into the third set before Colby-Sawyer tied the set at 7-7 on a Stephanie Vecchio kill. Precise serving by Colby-Sawyer's Laura Smolinski led to a 7-0 run and a 15-8 Chargers lead. Colby-Sawyer held the Mariners attack at bay with a -.129 hitting percentage in the set to propel the home team to the 25-13 win. 

Colby-Sawyer received eight kills from senior Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) and junior Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.). Emilee McBride continued her stellar day at the net with seven more kills on .500 hitting, while freshman Gabrielle Rodriguez (Ranchocucamonga, Calif.) added four kills and three blocks.

Senior Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) led Maine Maritime with eight kills. Freshman Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) added four kills and a team best 10 digs. 



Maine Maritime and Husson also played the New Hampshire Technical Institute in a pair of exhibition matches.
