LYNDON CENTER, Vt. - April 13, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a NEAC doubleheader at Lyndon this afternoon. The Chargers won game one 4-0, while the Hornets came from behind to take game two 6-4.
BOX SCORE - Game one - Colby-Sawyer 4, Lyndon 0
BOX SCORE - Game two - Lyndon 6, Colby-Sawyer 4
The Chargers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by
Jake Szulak and a pair of run-scoring singles by
Rob Wallace and
Sean Gavin. The Hornets, however, responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 4-4.
A walk to James Neal and a single by Sam Matthews set the table for Shane O'Donnell-Leach's two-run double which cut the deficit in half. After an RBI single off the bat of Isaac Earle, Tyler Pelletier scampered home on a Colby-Sawyer error to complete the comeback.
Two innings later, back-to-back doubles by Pelletier and Dylan Newton gave the Hornets the lead for good. Earle's sacrifice fly plated Newton with an all-important insurance run. Pelletier, Earle and Robert Trucott had two hits each to pace the winners.
Billy Johnson, who relieved starter Mason Brewer in the fourth, was credited with the victory. He tossed two and two-third innings of scoreless relief while striking out none and walking one. Shane Fleury came on in the sixth to earn his first save of the season.
Tyler Stotz had three hits to lead the Chargers, while Szulak and
Cameron Knight had two each.
Alex Drost took the loss, going four innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits. He fanned three Hornet hitters and walked one.
The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the second when the Chargers turned a rare triple play. After Earle and Shayne Kirby got aboard with singles, Trucott grounded a ball to
Justin Martin at third, who tagged the base and threw the ball to Gavin to force Kirby at second.
Gavin's relay to Stotz at first beat Trucott to the bag to record the third out of the play and retire the side.
In the opener, a Lyndon error and a run-scoring single by Gavin in the third gave Colby-Sawyer (13-16, 6-10) all the runs they would need to win their 13th game of the season and sixth in the NEAC Eastern Division.
Gavin led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and
Kevin Keith went the distance to get the win. He allowed no earned runs on six hits while striking out 12 and walking only one. The 12 K's tied for the second most in Colby-Sawyer history for a single game.
The Hornets (3-19, 2-14) had only six hits in the contest including a double by Newton that hit the top of the fence in right centerfield and remained in play. Devin Rhodes pitched a complete game in taking them loss. He allowed one earned run on seven hits while fanning five and walking none.
