Men's Soccer Plays to a 1-1 Draw with Elms

BOX SCORE

CHICOPEE, Mass. – October 7, 2012 -
Colby-Sawyer College's Carlton Wheeler-Omiuno and Elms College junior forward Ziggy Jonathan found the back of the net early in the second period as the Blazers and Chargers battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Sunday afternoon's non-conference men's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the tie, Elms moves to 3-5-1 on the season, while Colby-Sawyer now stands at 3-8-2 on the season.

Elms' Ziggy Jonathan scored a breakaway goal early in play in the first half when he sprinted down the left side of the field and was able to beat the Colby-Sawyer keeper in the left side of the net to give Elms a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers equalized in the 54th minute of play when Austin Hall (Auburn, Calif.) lined up a corner kick which he delivered to the foot of Wheeler-Omiunu who drilled the ball into the left corner to set the score at 1-1.

The sides each had opportunities to score the go-ahead goal as Colby-Sawyer owned a slight 21-20 edge in shots in regulation. The Blazers' goalkeeping duo of freshmen Nicholson Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) and Christian Kostka (Oxford, Conn.) and the Chargers' Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.) made 13 of his 17 saves in the first two periods to keep the score deadlocked at 1-1.

In the first period of overtime, Lukas Welch (Northfield, N.H.) gave Colby-Sawyer its best opportunity to score when he broke through the Elms defense. Blazers' junior defender Alex Rodgriguez (Fitchburg, Mass.) made a sensational stop on the ball to prevent Welch from getting the shot off just outside the 18-yard box and keep the tie intact.

Both sides had several opportunities in the second frame of extra time as Elms fired six shots to the Chargers five, but neither team was able to find the scoring touch as Austin made three saves, while Pennant earned four to keep the game a 1-1 draw.

Pennant finished with seven saves in total, while Kostka totaled six.

Blazers' sophomore defender Anthony Nitri (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made a tremendous block of a shot by Allen Nickerson (Little Compton, R.I.) after Pennant had made a save but was caught out of position on a possible rebound opportunity.

Colby-Sawyer's Drew Pehoviak (Monson, Mass.) fired three shots on target, while Elm's junior forward Adam O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) notched eight shots on goal in the stalemate.

The Chargers return to the pitch Saturday, October 13 to resume North Atlantic Conference play versus Lyndon State College. Elms plays their next match Tuesday, October 9 when it hosts Worcester State University.
