Volleyball Defeats Endicott, 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 18, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team defeated Endicott, 3-1 on Thursday evening. The Chargers donned pink uniforms and decorated the gym as part of their Play for Pink campaign, which helped raise money to support breast cancer research.

The Chargers, who won by scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-17 improve to 12-13, while Endicott dips to 10-17.

The Gulls jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set and held a comfortable cushion throughout. The Chargers made a late run, but a kill by junior Callie Dolan (Westford, Mass.) gave the Gulls a 25-20 win.

After the teams traded the first few points of set two, the Chargers offensive attack came alive. Colby-Sawyer's biggest lead was by 11 at 21-10 and a kill by sophomore Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) tied the match at 1-1. The Chargers hit .241 in the set.

Endicott began the third set with a 9-1 spurt, only to see the lead slip away as the Chargers tied the set at 10-10 on a kill from junior Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.). The set would then see each team grab a lead before Colby-Sawyer finished the set on a 5-0 run capped by a kill from Keating.

The fourth set started with an 11-2 run by the home team. The Gulls battled their way back to trail by one at 16-15, but Colby-Sawyer ran away on a 9-2 run to finish the set and match on an ace by junior Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.).

Junior Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) had a match best 16 kills for the Chargers. McBride and Keating also reached double figures with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) collected a match-high 39 assists. Le-Bruno led all players with 34 digs, while sophomore Sarah Hannon (Pocasset, Mass.) chipped in six aces and 10 digs.

The Gulls were led by a 10-kill, three block performance from freshman Mackenzie Guerre (Carlsbad, Calif.). Dolan was next on the team with eight kills. Freshman setter Alleigh VandeMerkt (Riverside, Ill.) tallied 29 assists and nine digs. Senior libero Ashley Norley (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped in a team best 25 digs. 

Colby-Sawyer hosts a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quad match on Saturday to end the conference portion of the schedule. The Chargers will play Castleton and Green Mountain, while Maine-Farmington will also play the Spartans and Eagles. 

Endicott hosts a tri-match on Saturday with matches against Coast Guard and Conn. College beginning at 11:00 am.
