Strong Defense Lifts Women's Basketball Past New England College, 65-46

HENNIKER, N.H. - January 31, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team held New England College to 23% shooting in a 65-46 road victory on Tuesday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play at Bridges Gym. 

With the loss, the Pilgrims fall to 15-4 overall and 8-4 in NAC play, while the win boosts the Chargers to 14-5 overall and 10-2 in league play.

The Chargers, who earned the regular season sweep of NEC, held the Pilgrims to 19 percent field goal shooting in the first half while shooting 46.9 percent overall and 22.2 percent from three-point range to take the 37-20 lead entering halftime. 

The Chargers led by as much as 26 in the early minutes of the second half, but with 15 minutes remaining the Pilgrims would post a 10-0 run to bring the score to 49-33 in favor of the Chargers.  NEC would cut the Colby-Sawyer lead to 15 points with just over 11 minutes left to play, but the Chargers would outscore their hosts 12-8 in the final minutes of the game to solidify the 65-46 win.

The Pilgrims connected on 26.7 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half while shooting 2-20 from behind the three-point arc.  Colby-Sawyer shot 42.3 percent in the second half and was held to just 12.5 percent three-point shooting. 

The Pilgrims were led by double-doubles by Rachel Williams (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Taylor Burgess (Randallstown, Md.). Williams totaled 12 points and 11 rebounds, nine of which came on the defensive end, while Burgess also posted 11 rebounds for the Pilgrims, including four offensive rebounds, and added 10 points.

Kate Levy (Woods Hole, Mass.) added 11 points on 4-7 field goal shooting and 2-2 shooting from the free throw line to round out the top scorers for NEC.

Leading the way for the Chargers was Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) who posted a game-high 19 points.  Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) added 18 points and a game-high five assists for Colby-Sawyer. Bullett also recorded nine steals, which was one shy of tying the school record of 10 in a game. Freshman Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with 11 points. 

The Pilgrims return to action on Friday, February 3 when they travel to Thomas College for a 5:30 p.m. NAC matchup.  The Chargers will also be on the road on Friday as they take on UMaine-Farmington for a 5:30 p.m. NAC matchup.
