Plymouth Comes From Behind to Defeat Volleyball, 3-1

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - September 27, 2011 -
The Plymouth State University volleyball team won three straight sets after dropping the first to come away with a 3-1 home victory against Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday evening.

Junior Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 24 digs to lead Plymouth

The Chargers came out strong and took the opening set, 25-20. PSU led most of the tightly-contested second set and held on for a 25-21 decision to tie the match. The teams traded leads throughout the third set before the match was deadlocked at 19-19. Colby-Sawyer nearly pulled out the set, leading 24-21, but PSU rattled off four straight points to go ahead 25-24, and then pulled out the pivotal set on a pair of kills by freshman Jana Nieman (Fair Lawn, N.J.).

Colby-Sawyer was determined to win the fourth set and force a fifth, and led by as many as five points. The Chargers had margins of 23-20 and 24-23, but PSU would not give in, and took the final three points to close out the set, 26-24, and clinch the victory.

PSU also got 12 kills from sophomore Allie Jones (Canton, Mass.) and eight kills and a team-high five blocks from Nieman. Senior setter Sarah Cady (Holliston, Mass.) racked up 39 assists and senior Danielle Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) contributed a match-high 26 digs.

Sophomore Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) led the Chargers with 14 kills and classmate Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) added eight kills. Senior setter Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) recorded 30 assists, and sophomore Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) recorded a team-high 23 digs.

Plymouth State heads to Johnson & Wales University this weekend for the annual Wildcat Fall Classic. Colby-Sawyer plays a non-conference match Wednesday at Middlebury College.
