NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 21, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer and New England College men's soccer teams played to a 2-2 tie in their first ever North Atlantic Conference contest, on Wednesday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 2-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the NAC. The Pilgrims are now 3-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
Colby-Sawyer was on the board in the sixth minute when sophomore
Kevin Flaherty (Wilmington, Mass.) put back a save deflection by Pilgrims keeper Robert Millard (Barrington, R.I.). Senior
Derek Veilleux (Winslow, Maine) took the initial shot and was credited with the assist.
The Chargers held the 1-0 lead into the break, but NEC found the equalizer three minutes into the second frame. Sophomore Sean Walsh (Kingston, Mass.) ripped a shot towards Colby-Sawyer freshman keeper
Nick Austin (Westerly, R.I.), but he made a diving save. Junior Aaron Kolb (New Durham, N.H.) was waiting for the rebound, took a shot that was saved, but the ball bounced back to him for a second chance. Kolb was able to beat the keeper on the second try to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 59th minute, Colby-Sawyer was awarded a penalty kick after a New England College penalty in the box.
Derek Veilleux fired the ball into the right center of the net past the keeper.
Eight minutes later, Kolb had his foot in the scoring again. This time he sent a cross in from the corner that senior James Kiriakos (Needham, Mass.) put past the keeper for the tie.
NEC had the best chance late to end the game, but came up dry after a shot from freshman Julian Yourawski (Peabody, Mass.) struck the crossbar.
The Pilgrims held a 21-13 edge in shots.
Nick Austin made 11 saves for Colby-Sawyer, while Robert Millard turned away three shots for New England College.
Colby-Sawyer travels to Green Mountain on Saturday for a 1:00 pm contest. New England College travels to Castleton on Saturday for a 5:00 pm start.
