Will Berry Saves Penalty Kick in 1-0 Win over Clark

BOX SCORE

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 14, 2011 – Colby-Sawyer freshman Clay Allen (Massena, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal in the 69th minute to lift the Chargers to a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Clark, on Wednesday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 1-3, while the Cougars who entered the game ranked 8th in New England, drops to 4-1.

Allen scored the game-winner when senior Derek Veilleux (Winslow, Maine) found him waiting near the far post. Allen was unable to connect solidly with the ball, but it had just enough to squirt past the keeper into the far corner of the net.

The Cougars had a couple of scoring chances in the first half, but came up empty when senior Adrian Blackadar (Warwick, R.I.) hit the crossbar and sophomore Aaron Segura (Wooster, Ohio) hit the post. Colby-Sawyer finished the final five minutes of the frame with a pair of scoring chances by freshman Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.), but Clark keeper Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) was up to the task to keep the game scoreless.

In the 50th minute, Clark was awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) approached the ball and struck it towards the right side of the goal. Colby-Sawyer keeper Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) guessed the correct side and made a diving save to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

After the home team went ahead 1-0 in the 69th minute, Clark had their best chance to tie the game in the 80th minute. Sophomore Zachary Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) sent a corner kick towards the box, but each team could not gain control. Once Clark senior Trevor Hendry (Waterford, Conn.) settled the ball he appeared to be shooting at an open left side of the goal. However, Ortega made his way in front of the net and got a foot on it sending the ball downfield, preserving the victory.

Clark held an 11-5 edge in corner kicks and 16-11 in shots.

Colby-Sawyer will host Wheaton on Saturday at 1:00 pm, while Clark hosts WPI also on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
