NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 12, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team defeated Gordon 4-2 and 1-0 in doubleheader play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference on Tuesday.
BOX SCORE - Game One - CSC 4, GC 2
BOX SCORE - Game Two - CSC 1, GC 0
Game 1 – CSC 4, GC 2
After a scoreless first inning, Colby-Sawyer got three runs in the bottom of the second off a walk and three straight singles. Gordon rallied in the top half of the third after a leadoff single from sophomore Brian Harrington (Shoreham, N.Y.) and doubles from junior Eric Wolak (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Geoff Brown (East Moriches, N.Y.).
The Fighting Scots got their leadoff man on in the top of the sixth, but Colby-Sawyer hurler
Ricky Perzentz (Westport, Mass.) got a grounder from junior Robert Hinckley (Raynham, Mass.). Freshman Cole Pooler (Orange, Calif.), who was on first, was forced out at second on the grounder and then interfered with the shortstop making Hinckley automatically out at first.
The Chargers tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from sophomore
Sean Gavin (Keene, N.H.).
Perzentz went 5 and 2/3 of seven hit, two-run ball to earn his second win for the Chargers. Freshman
Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) got the final out in the top of the sixth and retired three straight in the seventh to earn his second save of the season. Sophomore John Kanas (East Moriches, N.Y.) went the distance and gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in the loss.
Game 2 – CSC 1, GC 0
Neither team could get the big hit when they needed to in the second game. Colby-Sawyer left nine men on base, while Gordon left eight stranded. Each team had several chances, but Gordon had a real good shot to take the lead in the top of the seventh. A double by Pooler and a sacrifice by sophomore Jim Falkenstrom (Reading, Mass.) had the go ahead run 90 feet away. With the infield pulled in, sophomore Ben Davidson (Sterling, Mass.) hit a sharp ground ball to third as the runner was off on contact. Colby-Sawyer's
Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) threw the ball to home for the out that easily beat the runner.
Gordon's pitcher, Wolak, who had quickly retired the first two Colby-Sawyer hitters in the bottom of the seventh, then got into some trouble. A walk by freshman
Jon Wylie (Middleboro, Mass.) and a single from Martin had runners on first and third. Ben Davidson then came on to try to get the final out for Gordon, but threw a wild pitch that scored Wylie ending the game 1-0.
Freshman
PJ Singster (Sandown, N.H.) went the distance for Colby-Sawyer and allowed just four hits, while striking out six.
Colby-Sawyer will host Anna Maria on Thursday at 2:00 pm, while Gordon will host Western New England at 2:00 pm on Wednesday.
