SALEM, Mass. - March 29, 2011 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team fell to Salem State, 7-0 in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers drop to 6-7, while Salem improves to 5-8.

Salem State grabbed an early 3-0 lead after Mike Lamouthe (Beverly, MA) and Geury Alonzo (Boston, MA) led off the second inning with singles. A Matt Burgess (Kingston, MA) single scored Lamouthe, and after Ethan Trowt (Beverly, MA) advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Kevin Salines (Melrose, MA) hit a two-out single to drive in another run. Later Burgess scored on error by the catcher to give the Vikings a three-run lead.
Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) belted a line-drive single to right field in the fourth which plated two more runs to give the Vikings a comfortable 7-0 lead which proved to be the final score.
Freshman
PJ Singster (Sandown, NH) was struck with the loss for the Chargers. He pitched four innings and gave up all seven runs, four of which were earned on 12 hits.
Salem State freshman pitcher Ryan Hyjek (Tolland, CT) pitched six shut-out innings and earned the win allowing just four hits and striking out three.
Kane finished 3-for-4 in the game and drove in two runs while Salines finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run. Alonzo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
The Chargers flirted with a two-out rally in the ninth when relief pitcher Jeff Borges (Westport, MA) hit a batter and walked two straight to load the bases. But
Cameron Knight (Cambridge, MA) was unable to capitalize and struck out swinging to end the game.
The Vikings return to action Thursday at home against Lasell College at 3 p.m. The Chargers play again April 2 with a double header at Western New England College.
