Late Run by Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against UNE

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 12, 2011 – University of New England women's basketball junior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Nor'easters to an important 76-73 road win at Colby-Sawyer. 

UNE improves to 17-6 overall and 10-1 in the conference holding sole possession of second place in the standings. Colby-Sawyer dips to 12-10 overall and 8-3 in TCCC play and currently sits in third place.
 
Russell went 8-17 from the floor, 4-9 from beyond the arc and 6-6 from the free throw line. Junior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) poured in 21 points and had a game best five blocks. Sophomore Liz LeBlanc (Jay, Maine) was the third UNE player in double-figures with 12 off the bench. Senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) scored just three points, but became the 18th UNE women's basketball player to eclipse the 1000 point plateau. 

Senior Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) scored a team-high 18 points in her final regular season home game. Sophomore Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) had 16 points. Sophomore Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) contributed 13 points and 11 assists. 

Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 9-0 lead in and held the Nor'easters without a field goal for the first six minutes of the contest. UNE grabbed their first lead of the game at 29-28 when Russell connected on a three pointer. The Chargers were back on top after ending the half on a 10-2 run to lead 38-32 at the break. Colby-Sawyer shot 50% from the floor, but turned the ball over 10 times leading to 10 UNE points. 

The second half featured four ties and seven lead changes as each team jockeyed for an advantage. The Nor'easters held their biggest lead of the game with three minutes left to play a74-66. The Chargers did not give up and responded with seven straight points. After a pair of free throws from junior Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine) put the away team up three, Cailin Bullett had a chance for the tie at the buzzer when her 26-foot shot rimmed out giving UNE the 76-73 victory. UNE went a perfect 18-18 from the free throw line in the second and went 23-28 for the game, while Colby-Sawyer went 9-12. 

Colby-Sawyer will play at Wentworth on Wednesday, February 16 at 5:30pm, while UNE will host Gordon at 6:00 pm also on Wednesday.
