NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 29, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team won their fifth straight Commonwealth Coast Conference game after defeating Roger Williams, 77-59 on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-8 overall and 6-1 in TCCC play. Roger Williams falls to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
The Chargers shot 53.6% from the floor, which is the third best mark in school history. They also made 7-16 three pointers (44%). Roger Williams held a 43-38 advantage on the glass, but Colby-Sawyer outscored the Hawks 34-20 in the paint.
Senior
Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) led all scorers with 21 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor and 5-7 from beyond the arc. Sophomore
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) was the only other Charger in double-figures with 14. Sophomore
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) scored nine points and had a game-high 10 assists.
Roger Williams was led by freshman Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.). She scored 13 points and had a game best three steals. Junior Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) also scored 12 points. Junior Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first four minutes of the contest, but the Chargers responded with a 9-2 run to take a 13-10 advantage. The Chargers' lead grew to as much as eight as they held the edge for the final 10 minutes of the half.
The Chargers were in command throughout the second half as Roger Williams shot just 28.6% from the floor and 1-11 from beyond the arc. Colby-Sawyer's lead ballooned to as much as 20 and the Hawks could not come closer than eight points.
Colby-Sawyer hosts Endicott on Wednesday February 2 at 5:30 pm, while Roger Williams hosts Salve Regina at 6:00 pm also on Wednesday.
