CASTLETON, Vt - April 23, 2010 - Castleton State College defeated Colby-Sawyer, 7-4 Friday evening in non-conference baseball action.
Seth Harrington (Bennington, VT) struck out eight over seven-and-two-thirds innings, and Billy Manley (Lowell, MA) went 3-for-5 to lead Castleton State College.
Manley led Castleton (24-10) to its ninth win in its last 11contests, smacking a double, with two RBI, one run scored and two stolen bases.
Chris Hartery (Billerica, MA) went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and
Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, VT) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as Colby-Sawyer falls to 14-19 overall.
Castleton struck for three runs in the second inning as Ted Mills (Stockbridge, VT) tripled to right-centerfield and scored on a Cameron Curler (Vergennes, VT) double to center. After a fly-out, David Brandt (Contoocook, NH) delivered a two-out single to right, plating curler. Brandt swiped second and came around to score on a Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, NY) single down the left-field line.
The Chargers grabbed a pair of two-out runs in the top of the third inning to cut slice into the lead.
Matt Emond (Hooksett, NH) ripped a one-out double down the right-field line to start the rally, and after a
strikeout was driven in by a Mehuron single through the left side. Hartery then drove in Mehuron with a double to left, before Harrington was able to induce an inning-ending ground out.
Harrington then settled in and retired the next 12 of 13 batters he faced until running into trouble in the eighth inning. Holding onto a 5-2 lead, Harrington walked Emond to lead off the inning. After a
line-out to centerfield, Mehuron doubled, putting runners at second and third, chasing Harrington. Hartery laced a two-run singled up the middle to cut the lead to 5-4, before Tyler Erickson (Naugatuck, CT) was
able to work out of the jam.
Manley ripped a two-out, two-run double to left-centerfield in the bottom of the eighth to provide Castleton and Erickson with a bit of breathing room heading into the ninth. Erickson retired the first batter
he faced, then after an error, induced a game-ending 3-6-3 double play for his second save of the season.
Harrington allowed five hits, and walked two in earning his second win of the year.

Adam Wilson (Woodsville, NH) scattered 10 hits through seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) while walking two and striking out one.
Castleton will square off with Husson University this weekend in a four-game series that will decide the Northeastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Eastern Division regular season champion. The Spartans lead the division at 12-0, while Husson sits second at 10-2. Castleton needs a weekend split to earn home field advantage in the upcoming tournament, both days' doubleheaders are slated for 12 noon starts.
Colby-Sawyer awaits final seeding for the upcoming tournament for The Commonwealth Coast Conference to be held April 27 - May 2.
