Colby-Sawyer Sweeps Twin Bill with New England College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 14, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team won both ends of The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader with New England College on Wednesday. The Chargers won game one 9-7 and game two 14-0. 

Colby-Sawyer evens their overall record at 13-13 and conference record at 8-8. New England College drops to 4-23 overall and 1-15 in TCCC action. 

The Chargers took a 7-2 lead into the top of the fourth inning of game one before NEC responded for five runs to tie the score at 7-7. Colby-Sawyer quickly answered in their half of the fourth with an RBI single from Jordie Scheiner (Redding, Conn.). The Chargers added an insurance run in the fifth inning on an inside-the-park homerun to center field from Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, N.Y.). 

Hoagboon finished with two hits and three runs scored for Colby-Sawyer. Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) led the team with a 3-for-3 performance. Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. 

The Pilgrims were led by Chris Gagne (Rochester, N.H.) who went 3-for-3 with two RBI. PJ Crowley (Pawcatuck, Conn.) also had three hits and scored twice. Jimmy Lauzon (Manchester, N.H.) added two hits and two RBI in the loss. 

Greg Doucette (Ipswich, Mass.) earned the victory for Colby-Sawyer with 2.1 innings of relief giving up just one hit. Taylor Vessey (Goffstown, N.H.) went the distance for NEC suffering his fourth loss of the season. 

Game two was controlled throughout by Colby-Sawyer hurler Ricky Perzentz (Westport, Mass.). He threw a complete game, three-hitter, struck out six and faced just 24 batters. 

At the plate for the Chargers, Matt Muldoon (Malden, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBI. Hartery moved into fourth on the Colby-Sawyer all-time RBI list with 108 after knocking in a pair on two hits. He also scored three times in the win. 

Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) had two hits and two RBI, while Evan Leary (Concord, N.H) also added a pair of RBI. 

The Chargers will take a break from conference play with a contest at Little East opponent Keene State. New England College plays a doubleheader at Gordon on Saturday beginning at 2:00pm.
