NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 10, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped game one of a double-header with Curry 12-1, but recovered in game two to defeat the Colonels 9-8 in nine innings. The Chargers are now 11-11 overall and 6-6 in the conference, while Curry moves to 15-9 overall and 11-3 in TCCC action.
Curry jumped on top of the Chargers in the first inning with a five spot, but only one of the runs was earned. The Colonels widened their lead to seven in the second inning when senior Tim Sweeney (Walpole, Mass.) connected on a solo homerun over the right field fence. In the fourth inning, senior Tony Luciani (Weymouth, Mass.) knocked in a pair on a double to right field to give curry a 9-0 lead.
The Colonels scored three more times in the fifth on an RBI base on balls by senior Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, Mass.) and a two-RBI single by senior Rick Vail (Lynnfield, Mass.). The Chargers scored their lone run in the bottom half of the fifth when freshman
Matt Muldoon (Malden, Mass.) crossed the dish on a double-play.
There were four double-plays turned in the game, two by each team.
Senior James Page (Weymouth, Mass.) earned his third victory of the season for Curry with six strong innings. He gave up four hits and one earned run.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) increased his team leading batting average with two hits in three plate appearances. Muldoon and junior
Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits.
Curry junior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, Calif.) had three hits and two RBI's two lead the team.
Game two began with each team scoring three times in the first inning. Curry took a quick lead in the top of the second with a run, but Colby-Sawyer responded in their half of the second with two runs to regain the lead.
The Colonels tied the contest at 5-5 in the fourth on an RBI single from Hawn. The Chargers once again responded with two runs thanks to a sacrifice fly from Mehuron and an RBI single from senior
Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.).
With Curry trailing 8-5 in their final at-bat, the Colonels' offense came alive. A double by Sweeney, an RBI single by Luciani and another single by sophomore David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) began the rally. Junior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif.) drove in the tying run with a single to center field.
Colby-Sawyer got the victory in the bottom of the ninth after a leadoff single by Hartery. After a sacrifice bunt by Muldoon,
Brandon McFadden (East Dummerston, Vt.) connected for a single to right field to drive in Hartery with the game-winning run.
Hartery went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's in the victory to lead the Chargers.
Cornejo, Stevens, Sweeney, Hawn, and Bruinsma each had two hits for Curry.
The Chargers will host Western New England on Sunday for a double-header beginning at noon. Curry travels to Boston for a noon double-header with Wentworth.
